Preparing for winter II

Just a thought coz I haven't tried it but could you hang a see through ( the reason for which escapes me) shower curtain on a shower rod just behind the door.
I'm going to be lining my door curtains with shower curtains this year, rather than the heavy duvets I used last year (which snapped one curtain rail, and kept pulling the hooks off the other one)0 -
:jI have just finished sewing a fleece blanket (@sd@ 2 for £3 ) into the last curtain that needed doing. I am away for 2 weeks now and I am convinced OH will just put the heating on, I'm sure he was born in a barn.
We have a new regime though, when we light the fire in the sitting room, we open the door into the hall (& stairs) but close the door into the resto of the house, that way, where the thermostat lives is toasty and some heat comes upstairs. That is where I have done the curtains and I'm so pleased!! Cant wait for it to get cold so I can really test them!
Plan is to not increase gas DD at all over the winter.

Hello all
Really enjoying the thread and making my lists :j
Question :
In our lounge we have an electric wood burning stove replica.. if you know what i mean!
It will be our first winter in the house so no idea how cold it gets. DH and I were thinking of putting the Electric fire on in the lounge and keeping the door closed of an evening to avoid putting central heating on... do you think this will be cost effective? We have no idea how much electric they consume ??
All advice much appreciatedGoal - We want to be mortgages free :j

Fixing it with a telescopic shower curtain rod would need no fixings and it would still allow light through.
I've been in a freezing top floor rented flat in my youth, ugh the bathroom ... brass monkeys!

Sorry, wasn't meaning to hide it, I meant as well as. A a secondary barrier to the cold air.
Mind you I'm saying all this and I haven't even got a clue if it would work, just thinking out loud. I thought it would be cheapish and easy to install if it's rented (can't damage the decor).

Anyone know where I can get a white thermal fleece blanket measuring 100cms by 150cms? It is to line a blanket my 90 year old Gran has just crocheted for me.0

Can't start the day without reading this thread!:o
Loads of good ideas on here. One that I haven't read (and I know that a lot of people won't agree) but I start taking multivitamins at the beginning of October until about Easter and never seem to get colds. (I work with the public and OH doesn't subscribe to my belief in preventative measures so come into contact with a lot of snivelling and sneezing!) I'm sure that I save spending a lot on all of those flu remedies etc. Well, I would if I could persuade him to take them!:D I know that we shouldn't need them if we eat a healthy diet etc but it seems to work for me... and colds are so unpleasant and if you lose time from work thats more money lost isn't it? Hope this doesn't fit in with the 'medical advice' ban if it does just remove it please...:oThe beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Those fires usually have a fan heater in the bottom, unless it has a thermostat on they are very expensive to run. We had one and I just used to put the burning log effect on, the lamp that provides this does not cost much to run. One way to check is to put the fire on and then have a look at the meter, the quicker its going up the more its costing you. I would stick with the heating and a blanket!!Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
I'm getting there with adjusting the heating.... The fella who installed it set it to 25C when on and 5C when off as they're the highest & lowest settings  I've got it down to 18C on, 5C off and 8C overnight as both DD and I have a habit of kicking off the covers:o I know thats still a little warm, but I'm still trying to work out the balancing act! What I do know is that ATM I'm able to sit around in a vest-top without feeling cold
I'll get there.
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0
