I have looked at this thread on and off for the last few months, mentally noting all the ideas and making a list of what I need to do. We move home tomorrow to a far more energy efficient home which will instantly make us more prepared so a lot of the list is now obsolete, however I don't want to think "oh we'll be ok". It is a much bigger house so we will be heating more of an area but it is better insulated and all the doors actually close which is a start. As soon as we have unpacked I am going to make a start on some draught excluders (going to see tomorrow if I can feel any draughts) and I need to look into a curtain for the front door. Everything else has coverings at the window albeit light but I will replace those as and when I can.

Thanks for that link, I will have a look. :)

Was nippy here this morning - when I went out at 7am to feed the hens, I could see my breath  Autumn is here already :(

Its really nippy here today. As its the last few days of my holidays I treated myself to a visit to the shetland ponies. The estate is quite high up and some of the trees are already changing colour.

Now settled back to winter preparations. I bought two lots of red material in Hobbycraft in the spring. One lot has big white spots and the other big black spots. I am using it to make little tote bags for the children in my class to put their winter hats, gloves and scarves in. I want to put the bags on their pegs for when they come back on Tuesday.

Have spent the last 1 1/2 hours tidying out the shelved cupboard at the side of my wardrobe (6 shelves).

Before: 1 loo rolls, 1 toiletries, 3 towels (in a total guddle and I could never find what I want) and 1 "chucking" place (where I found a foot spa - now Free*cycled & already taken, a handbag I "lost" ages ago, 2 scarves, a hat, a hot water bottle and a really warm, thick cardy that I couldn't find for the whole of last winter:j!)

After: 1 loo rolls, 1 toiletries, 2 towels (now sorted by hand, hair, bath sheet and have space for face cloths, turbie towels too:j), 1 warm blankets (and space for more bits) and the bottom one now has my emergency toiletries/kitchen supplies on (1/2 shelf free).

I've been able to free up the previously cleared cupboard in the sideboard for my emergency (as yet non existent) food supply - thank goodness as was worrying where I was going to put that!

I've also tidied up the big shelf in the wardrobe which was a total guddle of duvet covers & sheets and found my electric blanket! By refolding and sorting into covers/sheets, have freed up about a 1/3 of it - amazing what a little re-sorting can do.:) (Really glad I didn't buy the duvet set I fancied the other day, as I have 10!)

Pretty chuffed!:D (Can't do a lot else as still tipping down - garden & patio flooded again:(). Might as well do something constructive rather than lazing around watching TV.

Getting my hair cut shortly as it's driving me potty and starting to knot as it's so long (not been cut since Feb) but not looking forward to going out as the roads are terrible.

Same here. Just put a jumper on! Standing by the hob as I have the gas rings on & oven cooking tea!:rotfl:

Looking for recipes on the net for winter meals.

Will start making my lobscouse I think!
  • I've been dipping in & out of this thread for a while, after following it & preparing well for last year's winter. Thanks to everyone for their MS ideas - I'm hoping to be "ready for winter" by the end of September, helped no doubt by never getting around to taking down my fleece curtain linings in the spring :rotfl: .

I was wondering if anyone else is cold today? I'm in Wiltshire, & at 3pm I was sat at my laptop in fleece PJs, socks & slippers but still cold so I've ended up wearing my old XL fleece on top  & its still August. I don't even go on holiday until Monday & just assumed I'd be wearing light tops & shorts - I shall be rethinking my holiday clothes! (I am recovering from an operation, I don't usually lounge around the house in PJs but I'm too sore to wear normal clothes just now).

If anyone is after silver reflective blankets then Wilkos have them for £1.48 - not sure of size yet as I'll be wrestling with it to get it behind my radiators on the weekend.
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D
