eeeeeeeeeek I have lost my list in the old thread
- find cheap microwavable heat bags - any ideas?
These are very easy to make yourself. We have an endless supply of wheat from the farmer opposite, but you can use rice instead. I added a handful of dried lavender flowers to mine and it was wonderful!
One thing though: you MUST MUST MUST make sure you put half a glass of water in the microwave with your wheat bag when you heat it up - otherwise they can dry out over time and eventually may even catch fire.
Anyway, don't want to put you off :rotfl:: there are instructions for making them here.0 -

I am getting organised. I still have alot of the foodie bits to get, OH isnt keen and thinks I am being a drama queen, so needing to hide them;)
.:rotfl:
Thats's men for you though, until there is no de-icer and then it why didn't YOU get some.
Or the gas consumption is enough to launch your house into orbit and then it's what have YOU been doing.
Just smile and carry on.

i was searching to find out if it was better to heat my lounge with my old gas fire (fitted in the wall, no artificial flames, no bars, just turn the dial click and it goes on after 10 second count.) - or to turn on the central heating with rooms turned off except the lounge - instead. Looking through old threads, it seems to be central heating one room which is cheaper?
these days it's almost always the case that the central heating will be cheaper. it should also give you far better control of where the heat goes.
you know that clicking sound the gas fire makes? that's the sound of pound coins dropping into the pockets of your energy provider
seriously though, you can go around and adjust your radiators in all the rooms of the house. you dont' even need to heat all the rooms all the time if you're careful about it. if you don't have problems with any damp then you can get away with even more.
i keep a little cheapie (pound store) room thermometre in each room i don't use much. i only turn the heat on in those rooms if i know they'll be used a lot for some reason or if the temp goes to 13 or below. i don't have damp issues here but in the past i have and a dehumidifier resolves a lot of that and is much cheaper to run than the heat!
one thing you need to consider is how the rooms surrounding those you use most will effect your use of heating in that room. so if you use your lounge a lot and right next to it is an unheated hall or rarely used bedroom that are quite cold cause you turned the radiators down/off it will make the radiator in the lounge work harder. in some cases leaving a radiator on in those areas affecting your most frequently used areas on at a low setting or for just a few hours a day can make a huge difference to your main space if you understand what i mean.
i'd say experiment, yes a few of them may cost you more than others but in the long run the fact that you are experimenting to find out the most efficient way to heat your house will pay off, and you'll stay cozier!
welcome to the group, lovely to have you here!0 -
I have used this place before for curtains:

Thanks for posting this, I have just bought a new duvet set.0 -
Picked up some reduced pork mince today for the freezer - I'll turn it into meatballs the next batch cooking day I get. I've also been through my cookbooks to find warming soup recipes for lunches at work. Any ideas where the best place to get a food flask is? I'd like to get one for both my DH and myself so we can have a proper hot meal away from home and I can reheat some of my homemade ready meals in the morning and put them in the food flasks to keep warm until lunch (or so the theory goes
)
Beyond that, it's actually warmer here today and we've got the door open quite happily at the moment to cool off. After a day in a stuffy office, it's really pleasant. I need to look for some fluffy winter socks for wearing in bed for DHhe loves mine but I don't think he'd wear red and orange fluffy stripy socks!
Welcome to everyone new to the thread - it's always good to see new faces.

Its been sunny and warm here today too which has been nice. Really enjoy making the most of these bright days
Looking forward to putting some bulbs in very soon too so I have nice flowers to look forward to in Spring. I adore Snowdrops but seem to have no luck at all with them
I might try to force some other bulbs by storing for a few weeks in the fridge then pop on a warm south facing windowsill so I can have spring flowers in the house sooner to cheer the place up... I am not good in winter so need all the reminders I can get that spring is on the way!
Need to prepare a couple of new veg beds in time for winter too so they can overwinter and be ready for SPRING :T
Our super cheap windup torches arrived and the penguin ones are a huge hit with my little ones who have gone to bed with no fuss because they are allowed to look at the pics in their books by torchlight! They look so snug in their new beds with really nice all new bedding most of which was half price at MrT :j They have the fleecey mattress protectors on them too so extra warm
Got my TV all sorted in my bedroom too now so when its chilly at night I can just watch TV in bed instead of heating the whole house :T
Must try to find the electric blanket too.
Got a few bottles of water stashed away in case of emergency
Each time I go shopping I pick up a few bits for winter stores inc half price Quality St from MrT for Xmas
I'm not far from shops but thats no use if they can't get deliveries so I intend to be well prepared. Besides which, if I am well prepared I can enjoy the snow with my kids instead of finding it a trauma and nightmare as I did last year from being unprepared.0 -
I was just checking the weather forecast for next 5 days.

Enjoy as much warmth and sunshine as you can cos here comes the winter.Money is not the root of all evil.
It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.

Having gone on a house expedition to find thermals, I can now not get my loved one to not wear his at night, they are so toasty! Managed to pick these up in one of those cheaper shops (like a market shop) and they wash up ok. Must remember to get another couple of pairs.
Keep warm. Amazing how a nice cup of tea and some cake (and a fleece) can make you feel cosy.Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage
