Where is the best and cheapest place to get salt/grit for the driveway. Just noticed today our council has slapped stickers on the yellow bins asking folks to report those who use it for themselves (that'll cheer up the oldies in my street... I've seen them with their little buckets ;) )

Has anyone else seen the news about the snow in New Zealand? Some cities seeing their first snow in 40 years!? Will snow make a regular appearance in winter all around the world? Maybe this is a sign of things to come!

Even more reason to prepare for winter I think!

Certainly looks like it doesnt it!

Do love a bit of snow tho'.. sorry folks :D

Afternoon you gorgeous bunch of winter preppers. :D:D:D

Well today has been good so far for me. I cam home expecting to have to finish off painting the last gate for the driveway and OH was there doing it for me - oh I just love him :D so that was one less job for me to do.

I gave the shed it's second coating of wood stain/protector which I just skimmed through. Washing is out on the line drying. I then opened the post and Sainsbury's have sent me two vouchers - £12.00 off a £60.00 shop and 12 pence off per litre of fuel too!

Well what a incentive that was, I cleaned out the freezer which was as you all know scheduled for September, but with these vouchers I can do an inventory and stock the freezer. The whole thing from getting everything out to cleaning it, to refilling it and shutting the lid down was 50 minutes flat. Have got some good room in there now so that voucher is going to be used for winter freezing food. Also came across some Mr Brains faggots - love those in the winter so might stock up on another couple of packs of those - so easy to cook and devine as well to eat.
Cat, Dogs and the Horses are our fag and beer money :D

Thanks toots - what kind of soap powder? (washing machine gel?)

All the rest on the "house" list - most of it got but not properly listed yet!:D (there's something to look forward to:)).

I'm getting a bit worried about myself, I have some OCD tendencies and seem to be ploughing these into my winter prep almost to the point of obsession (which I guess is better than something useless). I honestly think it's down to the timing of my op and the fact that by the time I can drive it'll probably be late Nov/early Dec.

Some things are OK (food - human & pet - I can get a big delivery October time) but the toiletries etc are so expensive if you buy them from supermarkets I'm determined to get as much as poss before the op.

Our council tells everyone to take grit out the bins - filled a huge recycling bucket a couple of months ago while it's full (don't tell anyone) and it's round the side of the house. There's only one - at the far end of the street) and last year it was impossible trying to get down the street, fill your bucket and get back again ... and again ... and again!

Ohhhh, it's chucking it down here (again) .... picked the worst 2 weeks to have off work :(.

When I was unpacking my bags from Home Bar*gains, there was a leaflet saying their going to be opening an online store which will be really handy (50 mile round trip). Just had a look and it appears to be up and running http://www.homebargains.co.uk/default.aspx
edited to add: I did it without the bit after .co.uk and it didn't work for me (?) have left but you may need to remove

Wee cat's obviously feeling the cold, hunted the house everywhere for her and went to straighten a fleecy blanket over the sofa and out she popped from underneath it:eek:!

Thinking I may have to head off to bed for a wee snooze, only managed 3 hours last night so feeling a bit tired now!

Thank you everyone for so much inspiration. :)

I have had a productive day. I went into B&Q and bought some boards for the loft. When the new central heating system went in I got the tanks taken away as they were no longer needed. The tanks sat on slightly raised stuts so I have put some additional boards across them. I am going to use this area for my winter storage. I also bought a roll of foam which expands from 1 -5 cm and have put in the gaps between the double glazing and the window sill in the two bedrooms at the front of the house. I am hoping the draft wont blow it out again! It was sticky on one side, but not very strong adhesive.

Next I went into Halfords and bought some extreme weather screen wash. I had some very dangerous commutes last year as my screen was froze and the dirty icy spray and salt from the roads led to really poor visibility. It says it works to -65c so here's hoping.
