I'm a serial lurker on this thread, but find it very interesting to read. I've just spotted these on ebay, and they seem to be a heck of a lot cheaper than they usually are.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post links, so feel free to give me a slap on the wrist if I'm not meant to, just thought I'd share as they seem a bit of a bargain.

What to do to help plan for the winter?

I feel the cold very badly (mum has Raynauds so may be heading that way!), but DH runs hot!

In the winter, I am always cold in bed despite flanelette PJ's (sexy!), hot water bottle and socks. DH won't let me have flanelette sheets on the bed as he is too hot.
Anyone got any ideas of how to keep me warm please?
I'm even cold today and its 20 degrees outside. :rotfl:

Can you line your mattress (under fitted sheet) with cheap fleeces or a spare single duvet? I do this for myself in the winter & can leave OH's side 'normal' as he's always like a furnace too.

thanks for the link... normally it's not a problem unless you are connected to the ebay seller. as for those, personally i'm not sure how effective they would be but worth a punt for the price i suppose, certainly thank you for posting them as i know a lot of people are on very tight budgets!

the ones i got last year off ebay have a mixture of spiral bumpy bits AND sharpish metal teeth like section, not great for your carpet so best to take off on the rug when you first get in but really good for gripping the ground. mine were great, well the one that stayed on, the other kept falling off so i bought some boot laces to tie them to my feet :rotfl: the ones i purchased last year were more similar to these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ICE-SNOW-GRIPS-ATTACH-SOLES-SHOES-BOOTS-SZ-M-/230637955777?pt=UK_SportingGoods_Skiing_Accessories&hash=item35b317eac1 however mine also had an area near the toes with a metal coil wrapped around something that looks like a bungy cord!

these look pretty serious, like snow tyre chains http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANTI-SLIP-CRAMPONS-GRIP-ICE-CLEATS-SNOW-TRACTION-AID-/370514620166?pt=UK_SportingGoods_HikingEquipment_RL&hash=item5644646f06 similar price to what i paid for mine last year. and if you want the original they have yak trax on offer too http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAKTRAX-PRO-SNOW-ICE-GRIPS-MEDIUM-NEW-FREE-UK-P-P-/250859586460?pt=Men_s_Accessories_UK&hash=item3a6865839c i see the yak trax have the weird spiral thing like mine does, i seem to have a hybrid :p

i found mine a little weird to get used to, you can def feel them on our feet but they really did make a huge difference. with my bad knee i can't afford to fall, i honestly think i'd break my leg if i did, or worse so i'm going to be strapping mine on whenever i go out in the snow and/or ice this winter. if you're on a tight budget though i hear wooly socks over your shoes works well and i'm sure most of us have some odd ones floating around the house.;)

aside from snuggling up to hubby in bed have you considered getting some of those reusable handwarmers? i have circulation problems myself AND i have to sit at the computer all day for work so i find my hands and feet get very cold and then the rest of me feels cold. thankfully, working from home i have some ways i can get around that

a big cup of tea or coffee helps to start thawing cold hands, wrapping them around the cup and soaking in the heat is lovely plus you warm your insides as you drink it. then i warm up my rice sock (you could do a wheat bag etc if you like) i keep this in my lap and then wrap one or both hands around it periodically to warm them.

for feet, i definitely recommend slipper boots, not slippers but slipper boots because there always seems to be that bit of ankle that gets exposed and slipper boots cover that area. you can wear a few layers of thin socks and then wear the boots too if that helps, just make sure the elastic in the socks isn't too tight as it will dig into you leg and cut into you (and thus slow your circulation a bit!) also i wear leggings under flannel pj's or even under regular trousers. i find the ones that are 92-95% Viscose and 5-8% Elastane are very very warm and so thin you can normally wear them under your regular clothes. i ALWAYS wear them under my trousers when i go out in winter now as my lower back muscles seize up fiercely when the cold hits them so the added warmth helps a bit.

getting up and moving aroudn helps too. so make a point during adverts or every 15-20 min on the computer to get up, maybe use the loo, put away some dishes, throw away some rubbish or just stretch. helps keep the house cleaner and keeps you from getting too cold (and stiff in my case).

don't be afriad to wear a hat in the house too, for me it's hands and feet first but hat if need be, once those are covered the rest of me stays toasty (and i rarely resort to the hat) i also always have a blanket over my lap at the computer and whilst watching telly. it's comforting and really helps especially if it's a duvet or a fleece.

as for your bed, you might try putting a single duvet under your side of the fitted sheet. this will trap your body heat from below you and help keep you warm without disturbing your husband. i also suggest putting a fleece around yourself under the duvet and getting a duvet one size larger than your bed so if you have a double use a king size duvet, this means there is less of the tight gap between you and thus less cold air getting in under it (or more for you to cocoon around yourself!) hope these ideas help a bit

Hi, i've been reading this thread over the last few days. It's made me realise (especially after last Winter) that I need to get organised.

So far my list as is follows:

For the LO (2 years old)
    Winter jacket
    Wellies
    Hat
    Gloves
[STRIKE]Flannelette sheets for cot[/STRIKE] my mum has offered me some of her single sheets. I'll alter to fit.

    Slippers
    Warm pyjamas

For me (OH thinks im being silly so he can sort his own stuff out!!)

    Winter jacket
    Fleece?
Thermals - i feel the cold all the time

    Wellies
    Thick socks
    Snood
    Gloves
Fleecy pyjamas - Primark trip required!!

    Warm slippers/slipper socks

    House

    Flannelette sheets
    Winter quilt

    Candles
    Batteries

    Snow shovel
    Salt & cat litter

    Deicer
Ice scraper - mine broke last year!

I need to make a curtain for my door. Its not fitted correctly so its not wind or watertight but the LL won't sort it. Got a draft excluder aswell. Need to get lined curtains up in my bedroom and something in the bathroom.

Still working on a store cupboard list, aiming to have all the supplies bought by the end of October. The snow hit us bad on 27th November last year and 17th December the year before (sad I know) so I'm forcasting it for mid November this year!!

Just back from Asda & I bought 2 ivory fleece blankets to line DS' curtains. He has a small room but its very cold even with the heating on. Also got him a new duvet as the one he had was a cot bed one (he has a toddler bed ATM) & his new quilt is now on & he will be tucked up quite snuggly in it. Got 100 tealights & 4 berry smelling pillar candles & 2 berry smelling votives too!
