  • Thank you to you all for being such an inspiration.

Thank you Cinny91 and Pooky, I bought one of the £1 foil screens on friday for a different purpose but have now cut and stapled it behind a radiator (rest of the radiators to follow) :)

What I actually bought the foil screen for was for a suggestion made by Bluebag,

On cold but sunny days you can use a heatcatcher in any sunny window to help add to the heat of a room. I make them with a big sheet of cardboard, usually about half the window size. I cover one side of the card with a black bin bag( must be black) held on with selllotape and cover the other side with tinfoil.

Place in the window with the foil side facing into the room, it's surpising how hot the foil gets and how much heat it generates for pennies.

Could these foil sun screens from the pound shops be used for this purpose? Any suggestions what could be used for the black side, or would it be practical to use a black bin liner?

    Thanks for your thoughts. :)

Those of you making the foil radiator things, if you go to camping section in poundshop you get 2 massive foil blankets for £1. Each is way bigger then the windscreen thing so if your cutting them down probably get a lot more radiators done with a pack of those.

I have had the sewing machine out tonight, my patchwork quilt is well on its way now. Hoping to have it completed for september time, not sure how to back it. Any ideas?

Re the salt for icy paths issue - does cooking salt work? Just as a kilo bag in iceland has come down to half price at 30p at the moment...? Im guessing it will work to a point, but not as well?

As for other preparations, I'm hoping to get some wellies before it gets wet and slushy (I hate the feel of soggy jeans against the back of my calves - so this is the year I actually get some wellies and avoid it!) and keep eyeing those yaktrax ice grippers for trainers walking on ice/snow - the bad weather will NOT beat me this winter! :D
    On the up :D

last year i made (cos my mate made it and raved about it) mulled apple juice. if you want a non alcoholic drink for kids or adults then this is the one! it was lovely and warm and the kids couldnt get enough! i just used apple juice and a mulled wine tea bag. i will definatly be making it again this winter. :D

i hate having radiators on. gives me head aches. so try to encourage jumpers and blankets as much as i can. dont even like the duvet on in winter. hubby thinks i am mad!!! lol
  • I am one step further on my mission to prepare for winter...

This weekend we bought some thermal curtain linings for the front room windows and when I'm off in August will take the curtains down, wash them and rehang with linings.

Also bought a rug for the kitchen for warmth underfoot as the one I have at the mo is worn out, I'll keep it for a bit longer in the spirit of mse and put the new one down when it gets cold ;)

Not many bargains round here at the mo, I am keeping an eye open on the web for thermal bargains although I find vests expensive. I picked up some cheap t shirts from the charity shop last week (3 for £1 rail) which will do for wearing under jumpers for keeping warm.

Arent we good getting all prepared when there is a heatwave on!

    Hello!

Recently new to OS board, have been reading this thread with great interest as i live in an old cottage in a small village. We moved in last Novemeber (Rented) and of course a couple of weeks later we had a very cold winter! It was so bad that some mornings we felt it was actually warmer outside than in the house!!

As we had just moved from a new rented flat with double glazing and all the insulation you can have from a new build to an old house we had no money to have the heating on 24/7, or go out and buy thermals! We ended up with two fleece blankets from Asda and two hot water bottles from B&M. We surrived but was really cold and had a mission to make sure we can make the house warmer next year.

Well here I am, loving the thread and already started buying and preparing for winter 11. Over the weekend I found a thermal door curtain from a new store in my mums town called Discount UK, i have never heard of them but all cheap stuff like B&M/Homebargins etc. That is now up at the front door and is looking great. Our front door opens straight into the living room and is single glaze with 8 glass pannels! = Drafty. Curtain now covers this and we also got a draft excluder which OH fixed to the bottom of the door last night. We are going to get another one of the curtains for our large window that is also drafty along with fleece up at another window.

Going to keep reading for extra tips...:D :D:D

    Bye for now

Today I have found some curtains that I've just unpicked to make into new ones for our Bedroom - result

I have fitted an interior letter box cover and DH sealed up the outside one [we have a box on the wall for post] so no more whistling wind will be able to come through there!!

Also in the process of knitting DD a neck warmer instead of a scarf - we always find the scarves are too long and if wrapped around the neck twice they are suffocating lol
