I remember my mother-in-law saying last year that it cost more to light a room with candles than to have a bulb lit via electricity. I wonder if this still stands now come the price hikes?
  • i guess it depends what kind of bulbs you have?

Beedeedee the radiators just need bled. Get the guy to show you how to do then you can do them yourself, ours need done all the time.
  • Yes - bleed the radiators. Bleed key available from diy/hardware store for a couple of pounds, very easy diy job - if you put 'how to bleed a radiator' into Youtube, you get lots of results:j

Thanks but we bleed them regularly already. This is the thick treacle like sludge that has accumulated and there is a product you can put in rather than a full flush through the whole system, which is what I was talking about......I was wondering if anyone had had that, or a full flush done?

This year I am trying to really cut back on heating. I already have a blanket and hot water bottle for chilly evenings instead of putting the heating on or lighting the fire. But I am looking for real heat saving ideas. What did we do 100 years ago? Victorians seemed to wear lot of clothes. I am hoping to leave the heating off for as long as possible and then only heat the house to 10 or 12 degrees and make up the difference with cloths or blankets . Ideas welcomed. I seroiusly need to save money as I cant afford to heat my home like I used to.

there is a thread called preparing for winter, got tons of ideas to save you money. Many people on there use safety pins to tack cheap fleace blankets behind curtains to line them. You cant see them and they really keep the cold out. Door snakes for the floor, big dressing gown to live in, winter socks and slippers
