We will be leaving at about 10am tomorrow morning and hoping to arrive early evening give or take a few hours for slow driving
    Any advice welcome.

I hope you have a good holiday and stay safe but in honesty I would not go. All that risk for just a few days. The risk of snow is not over and we are all going to be suffering from rain turning to ice

Hmmm am so tied on whether to drive to Derby from Cornwall tomorrow(xmas day), I have all the winter essential packed for the journey to keep kids happy and warm and they are sooo excited to see their dad, but everyone around me keeps telling me not to chance it..
I'm so tied, I think the weather forecast seems settled, no major snowfalls predicted,

Having had some nightmare journeys in past years over Christmas because of snow, all my instincts tell me not to risk it, despite the bitter disappointment this would cause. However, if you do decide to go, take a whistle if you have one, as well as using your car horn if you get stuck, in case if have to summon help away from your vehicle. Also check the weather forecast. Whilst it may be OK travelling down, a few days later for your return visit you could find yourself well and truly stuck.

Thriftkitten - I am going in the opposite direction. I am going today and coming back Boxing Day. For me there is a window of opportunity today and Boxing Day. I believe the East Midlands are forecast for snow on Monday or Tuesday.

Failing that I will see you in the Services!! :D

3 minutes more light every day now ie 21 minutes a week

Kittie, can I ask where you get this figure from please? From my weather bookmarks they seem to suggest about 20 seconds a day longer at the moment, so only just over 2 minutes a week. I do hope you're right, that would mean a whole hour extra by mid January :D

My poor sister is stuck in the snow trying to drive home. On the plus side she could walk from where she is but it's not a very safe area to leave a car.

I don't drive so am the wrong person to give her advice on driving in winter but could anyone point me at posts or advise me on what a winter car kit should have? I have some old bits of carpet - I asked her would she keep those as I heard they can help if you are stuck. Am also thinking a torch (good wind-up one in Aldi next week), chocolate, a drink, rug.

Aldi has ski gear/winter gear in their offers on Monday and car things next Thursday - might have some useful winter kit.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Oh I hope that she gets home safely Nuala Buala. I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction but I've added a spade, high-vis jacket, phone charger, cereal bars, fleece, inflateable camping pillow (pound shop), de-icer, small hand brush for clearing snow off car, and a couple of old car mats to put under tyres to get you away. HTH. (They all laughed but they aren't laughing now...)

Yes, maybe right Redlady, I'm gonna chance it, we have sleeping bags etc for the cold, should anything happen, failing that if it gets too rough I will pull over and check into hotel somewhere overnight.
