I went to pick up a dress pattern I'd ordered for my DD1 (for her GCSE textiles) and there was a woman buying thermal lining for her curtains - £4.50 a metre. I think I'll measure up and see how much I need!

Bought some fingerless gloves in a set with with some thin normal ones today for £1.50. To wear inside when its cold as my hands get cold. Will see how I get on with them and see if I would like the handwarmer no fingers gloves!

    Hi there,

So glad I've been following this thread and done things like lining the curtains etc as the boiler conked out this morning, dead, kaput This boiler is an ex boiler! .

I was without heating and hot water for two weeks the February before last, it was murder.

It was not too bad without the heating as we had some halogen heaters and a big calor gas jobbie, but the hot water was a total nightmare.

I really didn't appreciate hot running water till then. I was amazed how much I actually use and I'm quite spartan with it, always using a bowl and making sure the cleaner things go in first.

Very, very glad we have it fixed.

Thanks bluebag, I'm trying to look on the bright side. The LA brought us round an oil filed radiator that plugs in to help us and we do at least have an imersion heater so have hot water if very expensive hot water!

Hope for mild weather and a swift repair. Pretty decent bringing a heater round.

hi everyone i have been stalking this thread for absolutely aages and have finally decided to join in :)

Well so far out of all the handy tips i've gotten from here, i have managed to:

Home-make a draught excluder for the main door which has had thick curtains on it all year round.

added some draught excluder adhesive round the already existing draught excluding strip, double the exclusion :)

changed bedding to warm flannelette sheets, cover and pillows, (awaiting mattress topper to be delivered)

lined bedroom curtains with cheap charity shop fleeces

Bought thermal shirt from aldi's (£2.99) and thermal socks for me and OH (£1.99/s)

Bought my christmas cards from aldi pretty glittery ones :p

Hot water bottle each with no covers for us, warms the bed up nicely.

Bought a wind up torch and a bag of big tea lights from wilkos, went back to wilkos today and found pack of ordinary sized scented tea lights, 30p for 12 :)...bought 3 packs

    STILL TO DO

fleece line living room curtains and bubble wrap some windows

find a new mini oven as our packed up last week :( and the oven on our cooker has never worked:(:(
    xxx

a*g*s have some good mini ovens i've bought 2 one for my son he's not keen on cooking on gas cooker and one for my daughter and her hubby he loves it much better than their big electric oven cheeper on leccy too hth

I put my thermals on (Aldi's best!) tonight. I cannot believe the difference they make. I was thinking that I would have to put the heating on, but I am warm enough with the thermals. Wish I'd got more than one pair now!

    So, thermals - highly recommended!

    Hi
The cold weather this week finally made me realise i have to do some more things other then just reading this wonderful thread :D

i have (well Dh put up pole) got the curtain over the front door (and must be working as the cat now lays on it :rotfl: ) used the funny little hooks with the poles (thanks to the person who told me, but can't remember who :o , i really should make notes.

I've also bought new woolly hats for me and dh, wooly thinsulated gloves for me from aldi (didn't have any for dh ) but got dh some leather ones, and some fingerless ones for when he's working outside. I might get myself some for in the house (hadn't thought of that).

Also to people still after grit b&q have some in for just under £5.

I still have more to do, but think i will have to go back through this threas  to find out what i've forgotten.

Here's another 'night owl' full of cold, and sick of looking at the ceiling listening to DH snoring! I just had to say thanks to all of those who advised fleecy pjs, two layer walking socks and ikea fleeces! Yes, I look a sight, but hey, I'm warm and I have some cold remedies in stock! Who's smug?:p
Thanks a lot everyone, there's a feeling of 'all in it together' isn't there? and yes, I remember Hayley Mills as Pollyanna, always wanted some of those pretty crystals...sad?
Oh! and I was silly enough to let the door slam today while putting the washing out. Fortunately I was wearing thermals so didn't get too cold and a lovely neighbour got me back in. Have back door boarded up now waiting for glass replacement:o
Life's not too bad is it?:T
