yesterday i was making soup and busying in the kitchen
didnt have the heating on as it was only myself in at the time
2 came home and we noticed the heat from the cooker was as warm as the heating throughout the house:eek:
tried it out as "heating" today as its really cold
    works a treat

big gas ring on costs 8p per hour, against 30p for heating
and i have to say i think its even warmer (our rads are tunred down to 2)
temps outside are the same today as yesterday according to my weather station too
Hi Midnightraven, I'm not an expert but I remember reading on a carbon monoxide safety site that you shouldn't use gas cookers for heat. I can't remember the exact details but it might be an idea to check that out from a safety point of view.

Thanks folks for the advice on monitoring heating costs - I take weekly readings and put them into Imeasure so I think I'll do it daily once the heat goes on till I can see what it's costing (it calculates it for you). I've saved a bit each month towards the bigger winter bills so hopefully I will manage. Last winter, it wasn't too bad except for when the heat was on nearly all day when it was very very cold in January. I guess there are things I could cut back on to afford more heat but I'm trying to be green as well as save money so will be pleased if I can keep usage down as much as poss. But if I'm too cold despite layering etc, it will bally well go on ,carbon footprint and money be damned! :D

Hugs to those of you ill and/or housebound - it makes the winter preparations all the more important. Make sure you have lots of puzzles/books/knitting/entertainment of choice and treats in to keep you going through the winter.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)

Oh we've done that Sylvan, got stuck in a line of cars, picked up by the snowplough and taken to a farmhouse. Car sat there for a week - and the boot was full of COAL :( we were sat 15 miles away at home with none :(
My worry when working (nights) was that they would close the snow gates during the night - there's two sets of gates on my way home - and I always wondered what to do if they were shut. OH kindly suggested going back to work and doing an extra shift... :)

Hey Diamond Lil:beer:. I used to call myself by that name. Nice to meet another Mae West fan. :D

(I used to be snow white but I drifted.)

I'm not stalking you - honest! I was googling for snow gates to show Frugal. Couldn't fail to recognise you... :p

I saw these too, does anyone know if they would be ok for a bay window in a room that is about 10' x 14' please?

We get terrible condensation as it is only single glazed.

I saw those water absorbing things in Aldi too. I also got draught excluder tape, a thinnish kind for around doors and windows and a thick strip for the bottom of a door. They were €2.99 each (much much cheaper than Homebase) and are probably much less in £s. Didn't notice them on the website though. They were also selling off thermal socks leftover from another offer so lots of winter warmer-y things.

  • sb44 I would think it depends on your house, how much water they absorb, etc.
