Keeping feet warm- line your wellington boots with bubble wrap !
Just seen this on this morning. Just line bubblewarp to the ankles in boots and meant to keep cold out and insulate.

There be no bubblewrap left in the coutry between wrapping aroung radiators, windows and now legs !

Absolutely freezing last night and woke up to fog :(. Need to sort out my windows as was getting fooled by the sun for a while there thinking winter was far away !
Hee hee, had to share with you all, I read this tip as making insoles out of bubblewrap and was thinking 'what a good idea but wouldn't they pop and make an embarrasing crackling sound as you walk!' Then I read it properly and realised that you meant to wrap legs, not feet! Well, I am blonde...:o:rotfl:
A little tip on hot water bottles to prevent perishing: we always hung them upside down with the stoppers off so that they were kept dry (unless in use!) They seemed to last all of my childhood!:)

back to basics re a bit of understanding about condensation

    and more advanced
    http://www.buildingpreservation.com/Condensation.htm

so either the walls and windows will have to be warm or there will have to be less water vapour in the air. Windows are impossible to keep warm enough

The air that we breathe out contains more water vapour than we breathe in. Overnight when tempratures fall and the heating is off is when the air cannot hold much water vapour and so it condenses on any cool surface. Hence wet windows when we wake up

The solution has to be in taking away one of the factors and for most people it has to be to reduce the water vapour in the air. Many people dry washing indoors in an unventilated room and even opening a window is not enough to extract the moist air. Many people shower at night and the moist air goes back into the main house. Condensation is only the start because mould feeds on damp. It is worth while looking at the lifestyle first as that might be the cheapest way to reduce condensation

kittie - that's good advice about how to combat condensation. I think a lot of people don't really understand the chemistry of it and you've explained it in a very simple way. I think it's something for people to think about in winter, especially where getting laundry dried on rainy or damp days is concerned, because it's a battle many of us struggle with.

I think you're right when you say things used to be made better. You could also be right about bottles keeping their heat longer in a cover, but I need instant heat as I fill mine straight from the hot tap as opposed to a kettle.
Hmmm! Now what on earth could you mean by "Special Interests"? You must let me know. I could be missing out on something!

A good tip - and one I have always followed.

I think cavity wall insulation is a big help towards reducing condensation. Once warmed up, the internal walls of the house seem to retain the heat a lot longer which means the air indoors stays dryer and warmer. But even on cold days it's important to retain a little ventilation and to keep the tiny ventilation vents in double glazed window open. I tend to keep a watch on the prevailing wind. If it's blowing a howling gale towards the front of the house I will sometimes shut off the front window ventilation vents and open the ones at the back of the house. This prevents a through draught and some loss of heat but still ensures that a small amount of air is always moving around indoors.

I can't wait until next Monday when I can get stuck in with my winter prep. I've heard rumours of snow next week  How true that is we'll just have to see, but I want the house warm and all the jobs that are niggling at the back of my mind finished.

I think all I need to buy now is a couple of fleeces to line curtains/loft access, a couple of poles to put extra fleece curtains up in the kitchen, and then source some sort of large rug (might even try to get a big off cut from freecycle or something) for the dining area of the livingroom. The floor there is freezing, its quarry tiles covered with laminate flooring so if you jump up off the sofa in your stocking feet to answer the house phone your feet freeze, even in the summer its noticeably colder than the sitting area.

Anyways, I best go and get on with my revision. My exam is tomorrow and I don't seem to be getting anywhere :( Saturday is a pjs, quilts and TV day. I might even order in takeaway to celebrate :D
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.
Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!

hi off topic sorry but if you type in the dubliners song on you tube-a working man. It is very apt for the chile miners my family were from a miners community too and had experience of disasters. It made me blub. The images of the wives waiting outside the colliery -very moving. bet those old pitmans wives on the film could teach us a thing or two about os. we used to get a our coal quota that was dumped in the back lane which them had to be carried by a bucket to the coal house. May not have had much but we were warm at least.
