Preparing for winter II

I have a little old Trangia single ring cooker from my camping days many moons ago, it burns meths, spirits, etc.
How long do the gas canisters last with the bistro please? My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

This reminds me, I need to add UHT milk to my "big shop" I have planned to get delivered at the start of December. I always get one then and make sure I add all the storeable stuff so I only need to get fresh stuff over Xmas
I usually put it in around the time my birthday (end of January) starts to appear as a BB date on the cheese :rotfl: This also allows me to get the bulky stuff like toiletrolls in. Even though we have both Asda and Aldi literally opposite each other, both shops seem to end up with empty shelves in the week before Xmas, its like panic buying on a major scale :rotfl:I just stick to my £100 including delivery budget and make do
Will also add Salt to my next shop list. Should be tonight, but I'm trying to stretch whats in
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
I have been checking out ice grippers for shoes as I live up several hills and last year it was a nightmare going to work every morning. Food stores don't worry me so such as we have a car, but my husband uses that for work and I bus it. I teeter along like a geisha when the pavements are bad.0

I bought one of these this summer and haven`t used it yet as we have been busy settling in. It was burning really well when we saw one at a country show

we already have a sack of dry wood offcuts and I`ll buy in some charcoal. We only have electric for cooking and the wood pellet stove also needs electric so we will have to be pretty resourceful in a power cut. I have an os dutch oven and a cast iron frying pan, the types that you have to season and I was thinking that I can still make flatbread in the frypan or a proper loaf in the dutch oven. I`m going to ask dh to get ozpig unpacked and assembled for a tryout this weekend0 -
I love those Kittie, so useful AND they look so cute. Would love something like that for inside the house.Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far!
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

That looks really handy and cute. Not sure if BBQ charcoal is what you mean, but if so then the wilkensons here have between 75-90% off theirs atm, hth.My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

I called in our local Age Concern shop this morning for a mooch and came away with a new Foot Cosy for £1.
I am sure my 11 year old will want to use it.
I say new as it still had the tags on and was bagged and priced at £2.99 from Dunelm Mill. However, when I took the hot water bottle out of it the date on that is 2003 - 2010 so I assume it is 7 years old?
It is a blue fur thing about the same size as a laptop sleeve, zip at one end to put a hot water bottle in and you put your feet through the elasticated foot things to keep your feet warm.0 -

I have been looking at those too.
We may be better buying them sooner than later as I am sure they sold out at a lot of places last year.
My husband is lucky enough to be able to walk to work as it is only about a mile and a half away, that is a long way though if you can't stand upright! There wasn't a lot of snow left last year but lots of sheet ice which was a nightmare to try and walk on.0 -
I mix up powdered milk in a milk carton or bottle and shake it until my ears drop off. It's great for making real milk go further - ie means you can have tea with real milk and cauli in cheese sauce etc with the other stuff. Also I made a pot of gorgeous leek & tattie soup with powdered milk the other day - you cant taste anything different.
It's important to have 2 ways of cooking though, dont rely soley on gas or electic. These new Bistro Calor gas stoves are very very safe and steady and easy to use in a power cut... or at the very least get a Kelly Kettle. These are magic and will give you hot tea and supernoodles or cuppa soup
Sorry Mardatha but does anyone else read your user name as Mad Martha?
I always do and I know what it should be but can't help myself.0 -
