Wow, you lot are good. I was just feeling proud of myself for finally using the cooked cabbage and roast spuds left over from Christmas dinner.

Here's a weird one. My step father used to save the cold tea from the teapot in the freezer to make white wine. Sounds disgusting I know but my mum says it tasted quite good.

LOL, if they hadn't been frozen they probably would have been :D

I had some mash left over, knew I had the frozen cooked cabbage in the freezer and when I opened the tub found the roasties in there too, threw it all into the food processor and managed to come up with the best bubble and squeak I have ever made.

  • Cold tea provides the tannin in wine and you don't have to buy the stuff then. I make those waxy discs that you can buy from lakeland to put in between homemade burgers from the linings in cereal packets.
I don't chuck out the crusts of bread anymore I make them into breadcrumbs and pop them in the frezer until i want them.
Cereal boxes and the insert from tissues make good note paper or for your shopping lists!
Nets from oranges etc saved and balled up together make fairly good scourers.
The long flat plastic trays you get meat in are good for work in the garage they fit under cars and bikes handily for oil thingys and saving screws etc in while being worked on - saves them rolling away!
I also use the smaller square one for putting my bottle of vegetable oil, jar of honey and golden syrup in (separately) saves sticky deposits on your shelf!
Catering size plastic jars I use as storage jars for flour, castor sugar etc.
Glass jars I save for pickling and for in the garage.
I can't think of anymore off the top of my head!

plastic milk tops make good counters for homemade snakes and ladders.
Shredded paper (including old phone directories) use to make papier mache with my little ones (1 and 3), I have just made some animal storage boxes from cardboard boxes for the kids bedrooms - who needs expensive stacker boxes
    old socks- sock puppets
egg boxes- fill with paper pulp and cut into sections for starting fires
Oh and the paper log thing - many moons ago I did pay £20 for one of these (:o :o ) Since it was just a metal box with holes in and a lid which pressed down to squeeze out the water the icecream container idea from Sarahsaver would work- it was something I didn't do often since it was time consuming waiting for the things to dry and then they burnt really quickly anyway!
junk mail- use for post office games with the kids

    anymore anyone??
  • Cardboard boxes form the basis of my food storage system and my laundry hamper. I'm so damn classy.

(One of my friends came round the other day and said "I don't mean to be nosy...but why have you got 2 giant boxes of latex gloves under your bed?" lol she hadn't realised I could perhaps have put something in them different to what was on the label!)

At "proper home" I have those flat boxes fruit/veg come in for my shoes. My bed's lower at ghome and they fit neatly under =the bed & you can just pull them out easily.
  • Shoeboxes - I have one for keeping letters and cards, one for all those presents I bought ahead of time and one for my sewing stuff. I have 3 in my wardrobe drawer as dividers - one for toiletries, one for essential oils and one for hair things. You can paint them / cover them with wrapping paper to make them look pretty, or to use as gift boxes. Remember to save one for operation Christmas child! http://www.samaritanspurse.uk.com/occ/index.asp

Scrap cardboard - I cut out large circles and squares from delivery boxes and cover them with foil as bases for cakes when I have to carry them places.

Lecture notes - my friend sold hers for cash! At school we saved our notes for a bonfire party at the end.

    Spare mugs - desk tidy
  • I've seen files of lecture/school notes on eBay too!

hehe . . . heard a story of this guy who copied an essay from the web for his coursework - it came back marked A+ with the comments: 'When I originally wrote this essay 10 years ago it was only given a B but what an injustice! Definately worth an A+'

    But I digress ;)
