I work on a clothing department in Tesco. I've had several very rude customers DEMANDING stock for 1p.

The 1p stock is for the staff to recognise, on the handheld computers they use, old stock that is to be wasted and sent off to charity. The stock is, in most cases 4 years+ old. It's reminents left over from many seasons ago. These items are usually left in the warehouse, and very rarely on a properly manned shop floor.

There is a a process in the business to get these items off of the shop floor and from the warehouse, but sometimes they gets missed. Whether it's from lack of staff, not being able to get PDAs etc. Finding one item on a large shop floor can take days. Customers and staff can move it whilst someone's searching for it.

So it's not an offer, or promotion - it's simply VERY old stock, floating around in the business from many moons ago. I do believe you are well within your rights to purchase an item if it scans up at 1p at the checkout, as it's legal tender. But you can't demand that an item of a similar description is sold for 1p (like I have been today).

That's odd because the coffee and the After Eight bags were all very much in date, and the Cuponks were everywhere in the bigger stores. The Stig socks were also very prevalent less than a week ago.

I've been a team leader on my department for 8 years. The Stig socks come and go every fathers day and christmas. I have all the paperwork at work, telling me to find the stock and destroy it/give it to charity (that same charity that all our odds, repairable damages etc go to). Food wise, I don't deal with.

Maybe the After Eights were best before 1910 not 2010. :rotfl:

I think the poster is trying to highlight that the stock was brought into the business some time ago and with product rotation should have been sold before now. This doesn't mean it's out of date, infact most products such as coffee and chocolate have a use-by date years in advance. I have a jar of coffee in my cupboard which has a use-by of the end of 2013!
  • Went down to my local T's in south wales today and managed to get 3 of the cuponks games all at 1p. There was another 2 on the shelf but didn't want to draw attention to myself!
Didn't manage to find anything else, but am quite pleased with my £39 worth of cuponks games for 3p. Yay!!!:T

Hey, fair play to Jadee for coming here and explaining the clothing side of things. Let make her welcome and not knock her or dismiss what she is saying. We have to understand that the staff don't make the rules either and I'm sure it's been tough on them the last few days too.

Welcome to MSE Jadee :) Thanks for posting :)

By the way, which store do you work in and can you hide all the 1p stuff behind the big packs of toilet rolls and I'll be in later to get them ;)

The daily mail article, posted above, seems to disagree.

Does not mention anything about giving to charity, destroying the items.

As an earlier post suggested, if T don't want to sell these items for 1p, why don't they change the price on the system to £1000 for example?

Personally I think it is all down to either staff error or computer glitches, which tesco don't want to highlight any more than already has been done.

The stock that is to be destroyed..have they been recalled then?
How do you explain the England Football T shirts going to 1p? Many many different designs that said 2010 on them, surely they can't all have been dangerous or years old?
