1p finds at Tesco thread

  • It does come down to morals - I personally think that Tesco, despite selling items for 1p, will still declare a huge profit after tax whereas the majority of forum users share these bargains as a way of reducing our weekly costs. If the idea were so outrageous, surely the forum moderators wouldn't allow it. Whilst some people wouldn't be comfortable with taking advantage of the glitch, it's been ongoing for over a week and in my humble opinion, if Tesco are not consistent and pull the products and we can buy them legally at such low prices, I shall not complain.

exactly right the 1p items should be treated as a loss leader as in 2 days of searching for 1p items me and oh have spent £30.00 on other goods we would not otherwise have bought as we wouldnt have gone to t;s in first place.

Indeed it probably is a loss leader in this instance, particularly as people, like myself, have paid full price for some items they only wanted because they were to be 1p(i.e. me and the cappucino!). I have also travelled to stores 10 miles away today on my hunt which I never usually visit and will probably return to them as the change of layout makes the shop more interesting and who knew I could buy choc chip digestive biscuits (not me until tonight!)!? Therefore I have been exposed to more of their products ;)

I'm also dismayed to hear Martin is to include this in his weekly email. I've still not forgiven him for getting the coupon policy changed in Tesco in such a dramatic fashion as it is and this is likey to end with MSE'ers being called thieves and harrased in store. Not clever Martin!!
    Totally agree.

I complained about the way an sa rudely rifled through my bags to swipe my stig socks and received this response-...

...Members of Staff have been instructed to remove these from shopping baskets if they do scan at a penny as they are not allowed to sell this product at that price. The staff members, contrary to what your friend claims, do not keep these for themselves, they are accounted for on returns documents then wasted, accounted for then the store claim back money for the product. This is regular practice instore and I apologise that you were not able to buy the product but the staff were instructed not to sell these if they came across them.

So Tesco's admits that it prefers to send perfectly good products to the rubbish tip, rather than let them be sold or given to people who have a use for them? And it doesn't see anything wrong with that? Anything inconsistent with its claims to be friendly, green, etc? I'd rather they let the staff have them, or local charities, or even just canny MSE-ers!

Just got back from my on the doorstep Tesco Extra - I tried looking for about 50% of the list and found nothing. There were gaps on shelves and I got very self conscious as Tesco was almost empty. I'd advise if you go looking 2mor - print off the list as all I had was a couple of screen photo's on my mobile.
Not been in here for years. Life got hectic!

wouldnt print a list uf i were you thats what got me caught out, having a list. if you have smartphone or such write the list there in notes app if you have one less suspicious even though there should be no need to be conspicuous.

Sadly yes - I regularly see employees clearing hundreds of packs of bread rolls into large pink plastic sacks at ca 7-8 pm. When questioned, they say they don't have time later so are clearing stock for the bin now. Yes, the bin. None of it is given to charity or sold off cheap. It goes in the bin. On complaining to a supervisor about the shocking waste, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "we just do as we're told". And they still make billions.
  • I treat it as a game. The bargains are out there, I can legally have them provided I can find them, and get them out the store without the price being noticed and my purchase refused.

In 3 days of bargain hunting, I've failed just once when the self scan till didnt recognise the item despite it scanning for a penny on a manned till just minutes earlier when an SA price checked it for me.

    So far, so good :)
