Would any of you go as far as to sneak drinks into a pub?

I was discussing this recently with some guys and I was quite happy to pour myself a glass of vodka/orange and then walk into the pub next door and sit outside on the benches. One of them was happy to go along with my ever-so-stingy plan but the other was horrified.

However these days (after spending 3 years at uni and noticing that your body does actually have limits) I am trying to drink as little alcohol as possible. When I look around in a pub what sort of healthy choices are on offer?

Coke and Lemonade are not healthy choices IMO.

J20 and your other sugary heavenly drinks are also full of junk.

The best I could find was fresh orange which is ridiculously overpriced. I paid £1.70 for a half in one pub. Shocking!

Since a lot of my social life revolves around pubs (I am trying to change this, but old habits die hard) I have started to just bring my own fresh orange juice conveniently concealed in my back pack. I usually buy the cheapest drink on offer in a half glass (soda+dash) and then fill it up with my own drink.

I realise I am a tight bar-steward and to be quite honest I couldn't give a flyers.

The same method can be used to sneak hip-flask size bottles of your cheapest vodka/petrol. This saves a hell of a lot of cash guys, as many of my friends will testify to. Especially on stupidly expensive nights like the weekend. Although sometimes I'm starting to think its cheaper to sneak in the coke/lemonade than the actual alcohol! I know there will be some die-hard moneysavers out there who agree with me and also practice the art of tight-fistedness. Let us join together and celebrate our ingenuity.

Generally I wouldn't condone it but admit I have actually smuggled alcohol into a bar before. I was on a trip to Ireland and trying hard to keep down costs having been just about skinted by the flights and accommodation and drinks are more expensive in Ireland because the VAT on alcohol is astronomical in an attempt to combat the national drink problem.

Generally I keep it strictly honest though and save money by drinking before I leave the house if I plan to get drunk. I try not too drink to much when I'm out and try to drink more slowly and make it last. I sometimes go out and just drink squash which is cheap or alternate pints of squash with pints of beer.

I take a 6oz hip flask full of knock-off Malibu (or whatever Aldi call their own brand!!) and I usually have a drink before I go out too ;)

Get hammered on a fiver or so - 5 halves of diet coke, and a nice big glug from the flask...

    Cheeky but cheap :D

Happens frequently amongst my social circle. The campus bars charge something like £2.40 for a vodka and coke. It's cheaper for us to buy a bottle of vodka, then just buy a coke for 90p at the bar. I rarely spend more than about £5 on a night out. I don't feel guilty, I just don't have the money to be spending £20-30 each week on socialising.

Your friends think thats bad they would be mortified by what happened to me!!
The first time I got married we were very young and didnt have much money so decided to have the wedding reception in a local church hall and hire a mobile bar. This meant that we paid for the cost of the staff but guests had to pay for their own drinks. I noticed that husband's (now ex) family kept disappearing outside very frequently and so went to investigate as it seemed a little suspicious. Well, I went out into the car park to find mother in law serving drinks from the back of their Robin Reliant - they had every drink you could imagine - whiskey, vodka, brandy , beers, lager the works!! It turns out they had bought the first drink from the bar to get a glass and were topping up outside for free. Cheeky beggars!!

It is crazy, when I'm driving half the time I pay more for orange juice than if I was to have alcohol!
  • When I was 18, at 6th form, the local pub wouldn't serve me as I had no ID. Annoyingly, they served all my mates, even the ones who were 17. I snook off to the off-license next door who happily sold me a few bottles of beer I knew they also sold in the pub.

Wandered into the beer garden with all my mates. It was sunny and my beer cost 1/2 the price of theirs.

At uni, jelly vodka was my 'slow delivery system' of choice for alcohol

When my parents go on holiday they order one drink so that they have a glass and then they have a hip flask in a bag under the table which they keep refilling it with. They have also been known to take their own J2O's into bars with them. I'm contemplating doing it because I'm going to Butlin's in october which are renowned for being over priced.
