What a load of rubbish that is !! Not enough BTP because they are under funded by the TOCs !!
You ask anyone who works in the frontline of the railway and they will disagree with you.
Get in the real world. Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -

Probably loads of BTP where fare evasion/easy targets are involved, bit like the regular plod, 10 manning a speed/ANPR check but none to stop drug dealing in broad daylight.0 -
Maybe if the train companies didn't try and rip their customers off with unreasonable train fares, then people wouldn't need to find ways around paying a full fare.
To visit family 150 miles away it costs £46 return journey. I can hire a car for £34 for a weekend and £30 fuel. £64, £18 quid more to have a car for 3 days, rather than go on a cattle wagon and have to change trains 3 times.
It's a joke, public transport costs need to be reduced if they want to get more people to use them.
The railway was left underfunded for 40 years and the Government was never going to invest what was needed so private money was called for and they (the private companies) are just claiming it back.
It is no longer a public service but a private concern and they want their pound of flesh.
In fairness, in my area there are some top cheap deals to travel on the trains at off peak times and the service is pretty good too.
Sadly the unions predicted that this would happen many years ago but according to the public they (the unions) are just self motivated troublemakers who only ever go on strike !Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.0 -
Sorry to be pedantic, butWhen they handed over their tickets at the station, they were told they were each being fined £57 because they had not stayed on the train until their destination. The fine was twice the standard fare of £28.50.
2. Requirement to hold a ticket
Before you travel you must have a ticket or other authority to travel which is valid for the
train(s) you intend to use and for the journey you intend to make.
If you travel in a train:
(a) without a ticket; or
(b) the circumstances described in any of Conditions 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 22,
30, 35 and 39 apply;
you will be liable to pay the full single fare or full return fare or, if appropriate, a Penalty
Fare (see Condition 4) for your journey.
4. Penalty Fares
Penalty Fares are charged by Train Companies at some stations and in some trains. You
may be liable to pay a Penalty Fare if:
(a) you travel in a train without a ticket or Permit to Travel; or
(b) you travel in a class of accommodation for which the ticket is not valid; or
(c) you travel in a train and the circumstances set out in any of Conditions 10,
11, 12, 18, 19, 22, 30, 35 and 39 apply; or
(d) you are present in a Compulsory Ticket Area without a ticket or Permit to
Travel
Warning notices are displayed at stations where Penalty Fares are charged. You will not
have to pay the full single fare or full return fare under Condition 2 if a Penalty Fare is
charged. A Train Company which operates a Penalty Fares scheme will send you a copy of
the rules about Penalty Fares and a summary of their scheme if you ask.
Interupting your journey when you are not entitled to is Condition 16, therefore the couple were not liable to pay any further money for leaving the train before their stop, except for the cost of the lowest price ticket which they could have bought at their initial station (Condition 16)

Seems like Geordiejobsworth has some support here....

Perhaps removing all subsidies as this is no longer a public service would concentrate a few minds....0 -
Geordieracer, you seem to have put this on the forum just to provoke an argument. You also seem to take great pleasure in the couple's misery.
I agree to be honest, i've compared him to a wheel clamper of the railways in another thread, he appears to be delighted that these things are happening to people, is it any wonder that train companies get bad press when such individuals are in chsrge ?Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0
