No, you can not with advance tickets.
They decided to buy cheap tickets, ignored the restrictions and got caught. If they didn't want restrictions then should have bought more expensive FLEXIBLE tickets.
When the restrictions make sense I can see the reason, but you are talking about getting off a train 2 stations before with no loss to the train company involvedExcel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?0 -

It is perfectly possible that the advance tickets to Southampton were subsidised by Southampton itself to get people to travel there from London. Getting off early would give 'Southampton' a loss, therefore the rule has to be enforced by South West Trains as part of the terms of the ticket subsidy.
The tickets were actually bought from Megatrain (who incidentally do not offer cheap tickets to where they got off), who explicitly state that they are only valid at two stations (where you get on and where you get off).0 -

I don't know what Megatrain's T&Cs are but from your explanation it sounds like they were caught bang to rights.
ALso they can't have bought advance tickets from London to Southampton because South West Trains do not offer advance tickets for that service.0 -
Megatrain tickets are available for sale between Southampton and London Waterloo only and this is purely to provide competition for the low priced 'Greyhound' coach services that operate from Southampton to London. There is no coach coach competition from between Eastleigh and London hence there are no cheap train tickets either. It is very clear in the T+Cs that the tickets are only valid at Waterloo, at Southampton and nowhere else. They took a chance and tried to get away with it but got caught out by an unannounced ticket inspection at Eastleigh.
Why do people think they can can enter into a legal contract, renege on their side of the deal and then go crying to the media when they get caught out?
Furthermore I know for a fact that the media story is not accurate, either the couple are lying or the media is spinning.Employee of a National Rail train company.0 -

There is a loss to the company involved as they actually missed out on the revenue of a full priced return ticket from Eastleigh to Waterloo which is the return journey they made.
And as you dig deeper into the story it turns out they live a mile away from Eastleigh so they intentionally set out to defraud the company by buying the cheaper ticket from Southampton so deserve everything they get - especially for lying too.one of the famous 50 -

How do you know they would have made the journey at full price? They might have gone by car or bus to save money. Two cheap ticket sales are better than none. The train company has not lost out.
Still who needs common sense when you've got rules, eh?
I agree with Taffy on this, my response would be "Get stuffed, see you in court".0 -
Good to see the "Mr Train Master i do no wrong and know every law concerning railways" geordieracer

I have travelled on many trains and have bought a ticket to one station and decided whilst on there actually i prefer to go to here instead or my mates have contacted me with change of plans.
With an Megatrain advance purchase ticket with strict conditions attached? This is a Megatrain ticket, not a normal train ticket.0 -
