Oh Lydia, you made me laugh! :rotfl:

I remember coming home with my first baby. She was in her carry cot. DH and I were sat having a cup of coffee - I swear I'd forgotten all about the baby as I simply slotted into what it was like before with just the two of us.

Suddenly a cry!!!! Life was never to be the same again. It took me about four weeks before I adjusted to it, the 24/7 thing.

Now, with both kids grown up and away from home, my routine is my own. I had my own business teaching people to speak English. But, Feb 2005 my stepdad had a stroke and I and DH had to step in to care for mum who had had a stroke March 2003. Everything changed then as she has vascular dementia and I spent months sorting out the care package she needed.

I never got back to my business and now only teach from time to time. The stress of the following year really got to me and I find I can't face the idea of going out to work, so, now I am relaxing my way to retirement in 14 months and I now let two rooms in the house to make money.

Isn't it amazing how routine our lives are:
6.45-7.15ish get up, empty dishwasher, any leftover tidying from night before, sort gym bag.
    7.30-8.30 gym
8.30-9.15ish home shower breakfast, makeup, quick tidy round kitchen(tabletops etc), sort washing if any. Bin out.
    9.15-1ish work
1-2ish home for lunch, another quick sweep around kitchen, any other small jobs (bathroom or baking if visitors due, washing in if dry etc)
    2-5.30ish work
5.30-7.30/8.30ish sort and eat dinner, give kitchen a proper clean, sort any washing, leave out or cook stuff for lunch next day, leave out breakfast for next day, decide on dinner for next day and leave out/prepare if necessary. Sweep floors if really manky. also other irregular kitchen jobs like cleaning fridge/freezer/cupboards, tidy garden etc, just rotate these as needed.

8.30ish onwards - paperwork, filing etc, probably watch a bit of tv. Usually have some supper and clear up after this.
10.30ish tidy round sitting room (flylady bed time routine) put on dishwasher, clean face and teeth.
11ish ideally go to bed, often more like 11.30

Weekends I tend to take Saturday a bit easy apart from normal routine as above. Sat morning usually do veg shopping etc for week. Sunday mornings change bedclothes and towels and give upstairs a good going over, sweep all floors, dust etc. Sunday evening all ironing for week and cook a special dinner, while oven is on usually prepare food ahead for freezer or for early next week. If I lose a Sunday to family commitments I feel all out of kilter for the week :)

I wish I could say something routine about bathrooms but it's more a case of clean when I can't look at it any more or when we have visitors coming, usually a 'lick and a promise' once or twice a week and ideally a good clean on weekends :)

    Hello everyone...

I read this forum regularly, but don't post very often

I was wondering if all you lovely people could help me get into a better routine... I really want to join in with the flylady thread and also want to start cooking from scratch more....

DD1 is 4 years old and DD2 is 18months old...

This a typical week for me at the moment...

Monday (No work) - take DD1 to school for 8:45, DD2 has Tumble Tots at 9:45 which finishes at 10:30. I then potter around the house doing bits and pieces - severe lack of motivation!!!

Tuesday - Friday (work days) - Get up at 05:30 get showered & dressed etc. take both DDs to childminders for 7am and then on to work. Pick DDs up at 17:30. home to do dinner (usually shop prepared  )

Saturday - I visit both my nans with the girls and get home around 2pm

Sunday - Usually a family day as this is the only day my OH is home to be with the girls - this is usually the day we go food shopping as well.

(My other half usually leaves at 6am and gets home around 7pm Monday to Friday)

Any tips on how I could schedule stuff into my week??

Probably sounds awful as all you guys seem to do so much and I honestly admire you all! but I just can't seem to motivate myself

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi, I am lucky as not working at the moment. Like everthing else its what's manageable for you. Could you shop on line and have a good stock cupboard delivered. This will free up some time on sunday. Have a look out for some reciepes on OS board. I mainly do cakes, crumbles, ocassionally tortilla's when kids are either in bed or amusing themselves before we go out at the weekend, or when we come home. If you had all the basics already in like potatos, rice, pasta and the sauces you would only have to buy the meat and fresh stuff. Also for some strange reason when I worked I thought I had to be the perfect mother, always shopping on days off, always cleaning. Only recently found out world doesn't stop if I don't. As long as I have something in cupboard and something in the freezer or fridge, can usually russell something up. Hope this helps. Have a few hours to plan rough meals and list, then its out the way. You can then get on and have fun with the kids, spend time with your hubby. Good luck:)

:T :T can i just give you this, because i think you are doing great!!! You are working nearly full-time with two young children and visiting family on your day off.

The best thing that i have formed the habit of from doing the flylady.net is to make sure my sink is sparkling and the kitchen work tops are clear each night which puts me in a better mood for the morning.

From this i have now moved on to making sure once my laundry i clean a dry i iron any clothes that need it and put them away every other day so i no longer have a mountain of clothes in my bedroom which used to get flung about in a rage each morning trying to find the other sock for a pair:mad: .

Oh i try to do a hotspot each day pick on area of the house where clutter tends to congregate and bin any rubbish (i.e. junkj mail) and put away anything else takes about 10-15mins.

I am now working on my food shopping and menu planning by reading tips from others on here.

I lacked a lot of motivation after having the forth child i suffered with PND but slowly but surely by making baby steps i am getting there and if some nights i feel like i can't be bothered i give myself that extra push to be at least prepared for the next day.

It has taken me a while form these habits remember just take babysteps!!

Thanks for the posts.... its so nice to hear that you think I am doing ok :p

I had PND for about 6 months after my second.... it was horrible... definitely put me off having anymore... I never understood it before when people spoke about it... I used to think it was impossible to resent a little tiny baby... how wrong was I.

Right... tonight I am going to ensure that my kitchen sink and worktops are shiny before I go to bed and clear my most annoying hotspot (the gap between the wall and the side of the microwave has become a paperwork dumping ground!!!!) I will file while I watch a bit of tv with a cuppa :p

OH is on his way back from Calais as I type... so he should be home in time to help me write labels on folders... hee hee... at least he will help if he wants feeding tonight!!!!

Thanks again... will keep you posted as to how I get on.

You'll be quite welcome over on the Flylady thread - there's a few of us who work and just fit in what we can. We're a friendly lot and you'll notice a difference if you just do one thing a day. Don't look at the big long list as lots of people don't do all that in a day - just do level one for each room each day and you'll notice a difference or make your own lists - no-one minds. Everyone encourages each other even if all you do is hoover up and wash the dishes.

Other than that, have you got a slow cooker? I find I can quickly chuck some stuff in mine in a morning and it's ready for when I get in from work at night.

Your little ones are only young so they'll still be a lot of hard work on top of the fact that you're working such long days - don't be too hard on yourself - baby steps - just think about one thing to change at a time.

I'll expect you to pop in and say hello on the Flylady thread!:rotfl:

Seriously though, don't try and do too much - you're already doing plenty.

    Hi Lyn's

Keep us posted, just remember not to try and do too much as it's easy to get overwhelmed and de-motivate yourself.

    Take Care.

  • Hi Lyns

I had a similar place for paperwork to gather - on top of the microwave! I keep two document wallets there now instead. One for papers that need filing and the other for papers that require me to do things. Each day when I open the post I put the papers into whichever file is appropriate. I then try and go through the files once or twice a week to keep on top of them. It just means that it looks a bit neater in the kitchen and makes it more manageable for me to deal with.

I have a 6 month old and am currently on maternity leave but just never seem to find time to get everything done.

I do however find that doing my food shop online really helps and I meal plan. I don't decide exactly what to have each day but I keep a list of all available meals we can have stuck on the front of the fridge. It just stops us thinking we don't have anything in to eat and because we cross out each meal as it gets eaten it makes it easier to food shop.

It has taken me a couple of months to get this organised and make these couple of things a part of my natural routine. I find it hard to keep our house organised and tidy but am slowly getting there. My brother in law had the cheek the other week to comment that our home is messy but my family is happy which has to be the most important thing and I would rather spend time playing with my son than constantly cleaning. I guess it is all about finding a balance.

    Good luck with getting motivated!

The annoying thing is I have a 2 drawer filing cabinet sitting in the living room (underneath a tablecloth thing so it doesn't look hideous ;) ) and its empty:rolleyes:

We recently moved into rented accommodation (sold our house to pay off some debts and gain extra room as we were in a one bed house:eek: ) and I don't know how long to keep the paperwork from the old place... do I just hang onto all the "final" bills or keep a years worth????

Thanks for being so kind everyone... and I promise to go introduce myself on the flylady thread :p
