If only could work out a routine - but working shifts on a 12 week rotation means that every week is different. I sometimes have to work differnet times every day in one week and days off vary.
Fiance works 12 hour shifts 3 days on and 3 days off.

When I am on later shift I find that by the time I get home I can't be bothered to do any housework and by time I have a day off I am usually so knackered that I begrudge having to spend the full day getting my house nice.

We live in a pig sty. It really bothers me but I just can't get motivated!!

Wow guys, i am so impressed with everyone's organisational skills.
My day used to consist of:

5am - shower and race round getting ready for work
5.30-7.30am commute to office in London
Work all day and miss lunch
    6-8pm commute home
8ish decide what to do for dinner, usually something bad and lazy.
8-various bedtime - catch up with OH and spend quality time

Now we have a 10 week old baby boy (planned when we thought littlies would be nice - and had a blissful hazy perception of smiling baby from persil box :rotfl: )

So now i have no routine and no idea what day it is. The day doesn't begin at any specific time, in fact yesterday never ended, it just sort of blended into today - what with the night time feeds, and day time nap battles (i thought babies were supposed to sleep during the day:confused: )

I still miss lunch as i am too busy doing an impression of a headless chicken all day, whilst trying to stop baby screaming as he is over-tired and grumpy (and also seems to be teething early  ). Bedtime consists of OH removing book from my snoring face (i have been reading the same chapter since G was born :rotfl: )

During the day when pacing the lounge with scarlet faced bellowing baby, i realise i need a routine, as i watch great balls of dusty cat fur blow across the parque (spelling) floor. My slow cooker hasn't seen the light of day since i have no time to even remember what cupboard i put it in. My only saving grace is our dishwasher, which i try and put on before i go to bed. Unfortunately the pixies that used to empty it have now left home due to the constantly screaming baby - but they haven't given me their new address, as they are scared i may come to visit with baby :rotfl: .

I have lost count of the number of people who tell me it will get better, and can't remember the last time someone told me i 'looked well/was blooming'. Now i just get b*gger me, you look knackered/shattered/like sh*t. :rotfl:

Would i change it???? Not for all the money in the world - although if i get another rare spare moment like tonight i may be back for tips on fly lady, etc.

PS. All tips on getting a routine/getting baby to nap even for 5 mins during the day, so i can go to the loo without the door open and vibrating bouncy chair in doorway would be greatly appreciated!!! :D
    What's he building in there???

My routine is pretty much the same from day to day.
Even on school holidays, things dont change much, only the babysitter has the pleasure of my kids whilst I work.

Get up around 7.30-7.45, shower, breakfast, get kids up for school.
    8.45am, kids to school
9.00am - WM on (if Ive not done this when I get up), general housetidy, quick wipe over both toilets, sort the morning mail out which arrives
    9.40am - leave for work
    10-2pm - work
2.15pm - home, start drying the washing from the morning, either peg out or TD, sort out whats for dinner, iron clothes/uniforms for the following day. Cup of tea!
3pm - fetch kids from school
3.30pm - usually a trip to the post office to post sold items from ebay sales.
4pm - start cooking dinner, all meals are cooked from scratch, unless its a fish night, then its frozen Tesco portions.
Between 4pm - 7pm - usually consists of, doing dinner & eating it, unload & re-load DW, sort out dried washing & put away, feed the animals (3 cats, 1 dog, 1 rabbit & 1 hamster), do pack lunches for the following day. After school/evening classes for the kids. Homework.
7pm - 8pm - is bath time for me, then the kids.
8pm - chill out after another general tidy up.
    10pm - 11pm - dog out, start switching things off,windows/doors closed/locked etc.
    Bed!

Weekends consist off, town to the bank to pay bills, food shopping, gardening if weather nice (for OH) whilst I list items on ebay, housework - which means a thorough clean through, bedding changes once a fortnight.
OH does a car boot every sunday morning (weather permitting), whilst I prep food for sunday dinner, baking in the afternoon, inbetween feeding the animals, and getting things ready sunday night for Monday work/school. Try and fit a family walk out somewhere.

My OH works on a 6 wk shirt pattern, and sometimes he works late, which means some of the routine gets done late, mainly dinner. We still stick by what we do, and things are no differnt, jobs just get done a little late on in the day as what they would if he was on an early!

... and how does OS fit into it?

A thread elsewhere on MSE got me thinking about how on earth people find time to do stuff. I lead a life of constant mess and turmoil and I haven't even got a child to worry about!

My day starts at 6.45am - dogs out, WM on, glass of water and peel eyes open, half hour of exercise, shower, make lunch for OH, breakfast, iron clothes if absolutely necessary, at work for 8.30am.
Most days I'm home (shattered) by 6.30-7pm, but might get back at half 5 a couple of times a week, or be after 9 some nights. Dogs walked if I can, then I sling together some food, shove some laundry around half heartedly, shuffle some paperwork, scan some journals and check emails (and [strike]waste time[/strike] pick up handy hints on here) and then fall into bed. When I have a weekend free I spend it catching up on laundry, batch-cooking like a woman possessed so we don't find ourselves eating sh*te for lunches, and scrubbing the kitchen and loo. Things like breadmaking, vinegar window-washing and skipping around scattering soft fragrant handfuls of bicarbonate of soda just don't fit into my schedule!

How does anyone normal find time to wipe their skirting boards down, let alone have children? I think you're all mad/amazing ... can you tell me how you do it?

Sounds exactly like my day! In work by 7.30 and home any time between 6pm and 3am! I wipe the bathroom skirting boards when I am on the lav and all the others get hoovered when I find an hour in the week to actually get the hoover out

I think it makes a big difference getting home before 5pm because there are still some daylight hours left to do things around the house and it is early enough not to get an ASBO for vacuuming at midnight

Saturdays should be my day off but if I haven't got a pile of journals to work my way through or a paper to write then I end up doing a weeks worth of washing and cleaning/tidying in 1 day.

I always felt bad going to my friends house as she works similar hours to me but it was always spotless until she confessed she has a cleaner!!!!

Oh Lydia.42 you made laugh and brought back memories of my own maternity leave which was 8 years ago. my son would fall asleep during the day when I was pushing the pram, I'd be shattered and in need of a cuppa when we returned but then he'd want to play...
Routine worked for me and a few people I know swear by the Contented Little Baby book which is really rigid but works apparently.

I have 2 routines, it just depends on whether hubby is working or not.

If he is, then the routine goes like this.
5:15 alarm goes off & I leap straight out of bed (otherwise I'd fall asleep again.) Put kettle on, feed fish
    5:20 Take hubby a cuppa
5:25 Wash, dress & brush hair, throw covers over the end of bed
5:30 Back downstairs, make hubby another cuppa, pack lunches up (sarnies made last night)
5:55 Leave home, drive hubby to the mainline station, once a week I put £20 petrol in the car.
6:20 Get home, feed Thumper & Ogden & let them out for the day, hang washing on the line, empty dishwasher & start to reload, start evening meal, wipe surfaces, make bed & then surf until 7ish
7:00 Leave for work, stopping a local Mr T, grab any reduced items.
7:30 Get to work, empty dishwasher (no it's not my job, but I seem to be the only person who knows what it's for).
3:30 Move desks to start second job
    5:30 Leave for home
5:45 get home, it's a shorter journey as it's all down hill, start cooking, check on Thumper & Ogden, get washing in, clean bathrooms & toilets, start BM, make sandwiches for tomorrow & refridgerate, put iron & ironing board away as this task seems to defeat both lodgers!
6:00 Collect hubby from local station
6:15 Feed everyone, load dishwasher, wipe surfaces, load washing machine. Put Thumper & Ogden away for the night, feed fish
7:00 Start knitting & telephone job.
8:30 Go upstairs, have shower wash hair, clean loos go back downstairs clean loo, start DW & WM, get drink af water, check front & back doors are shut, both lodgers have a habit of leaving them open.
9:00 get into bed, read or watch TV.
    10.00 Sleep

If hubby isn't working then I get up an hour later, still make him a cuppa or 2, but then he does the WM, DW, BM, hangs out the washing & takes care of the fish & Thumper & Ogden, & will often start preparing an evening meal.

Saturdays, I dust, wipe & vacuum everywhere
Sundays we usually have a lazy day apart from cooking lunch & batch baking & cooking for following week.

I've just read all this, and I'm in awe. I've no idea how people find the time to have children in the first place let alone keep them fed and washed and schooled!
    My day goes:
    7:00am - alarm goes off
Sometime between 7:00am and 7:20am - drag myself out of bed (have tried to do this earlier but am now resigned to fact I am not morning person), wash face, brush teeth, squirt of deodorant, throw clothes around room until I find something work-friendly and reasonably clean to put on
7:30am down a glass of water and a bowl of muesli if I've got the time. Stick a bit of mascara and concealer on. Brush hair.Try to avoid looking at dinner-encrusted washing up rotting in sink.
7:50am Grab lunch (leftovers from previous night) out of fridge and run to bus stop opening post on the way.
    8:30am Arrive at work
5:30pm arrive home from work. Have a shower. Do the washing up. Stick the dinner on. Unless it's a Wednesday or Thursday in which case I go straight to dance class or college.
6pm ish - eat dinner. Get a bit of college work done if I've got the energy. If not either read, surf net, chat to OH if he's there or slob in front of telly.
    10pm bedtime.

I clean only when the dirt gets embarrassing, my house is a tip, and I regularly run out of clean underwear - so hats off to those of you with kids (especially those with jobs as well!), I don't know how you do it!

    Routine (weekdays only)

6.45 Stagger out of bed towards yoga mat.
6.46 Grab ankles, breathe deeply, attempt to contemplate navel despite navel being well-hidden due to dietary excesses,
7.15 Wash, dress, eat, throw things into lock-and-lock box for lunch.
7.45 Walk, bus, walk to work
    9.00 Arrive at work
    5.00 Leave work
6.00 If go home: Eat, watch telly, wash up dinner stuff, go to bed.
If Monday and Tuesday do all other housework.
If stay out: go to pub/restaurant, go to cinema/theatre, go back to
pub, go home, go to bed.
Bedtime: Anywhere between 9.30 and 12.00

I've completely given up on the idea of doing housework at weekends, I never do it then, I'm too busy enjoying myself. Monday and Tuesday, I'm usually feeling jaded and don't mind dancing round the house with the hoover and a cheesy radio station playing.
