I have one more suggestion. My sister used to work nights cleaning operating theatres in her local hospital [a specialised job so she wasn't required to change her shifts]. She used to start when the late shift finished at 9 pm, although this may vary.
Someone mentioned that care home assistants are required to work rotating shifts, I do know some people who worked only nights so it is worth making enquiries. Also check out agencies where you can specify what hours you are available.0

Just another suggestion what about call centre work? They usually have hours to suit pt workers? I worked for one in Manchester (Until my job went to India) which was 24/7 and the money was excellent. Not the most fulfilling of jobs, but very flexible hours.Right now I'm having amnesia and deja- vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before0

I work p/t in a restaurant, just do friday/saturday nights. Money is good and i can do my degree full time.
My daughter is 6 though so is at school when i'm at uni.The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

I used to work as an evening receptionist in our local A&E department - not for the sqeamish but it was a goiod job, got to meet all the ambulance crews and local police, and the nursing staff and doctors were good too. There are lots of out of hours clinics opening now - perhaps they might need staff?:j Almost 2 stones gone! :j

In order to do the earlier night shifts why not contact the local childminders and see if they are able to take yours on for an hour or two before OH gets back then you can get started earlier and he can collect them, it shouldn't eat into your money too much if you work several hours without the childcare too. Also I believe childminders can be classed under the childcare provision of 15 hours, so you might find you are only paying for one child.
You could also consider looking into a childminder as opposed to a nursery as often they are cheaper. Alternatively a day nanny might be cheaper than a day nursery!
Alternatively are there any other HR jobs locally that offer onsite childcare, often that is subsidised, you can stay in your field just with another company.
Finally, I don't think you should be stating career change or flexibility when it comes to applying for jobs. If you are looking to stack shelves, from HR they will wonder if you have thought it through properly as a career change, and stating flexibility will put an employer off the idea, they want commitment when they employ. Instead I would suggest stating your circumstances require you to work nights and leave it at that.

Good luck! BTW I would go on counting pennies suggestion of why you are looking for this type of work from what you currently do.0
