Any mums here who work during the evenings/nights?

Would you mind me asking what you do for a living?

I need to start working after my husband gets home from work (6.45pm). I am currently working full time during the days but my childcare has rocketed so its not feasible anymore.

I'd love to hear what other mums do and what options there are for me?

  • I work nights as a nurse and sleep when the children are at school/nursery. Night work often pays a premium so I can work less hours and still get paid the same.

I also sell usborne Books which I fit around my night shifts and sometimes take the children with me, if the particular job allows.
  • Thanks Caroline - nursing is something that I have been looking into recently. Just this morning I have been seeing what the bursary would pay me and how I could incorporate the study time into my days. The course is full for September, but they do another intake in March so lets see what happens!

  • I'd really recommend working as a Health Care Assistant before starting a nursing course. You gain great experience and will be much more confident in your studies. Find a post now and you could be started in a few weeks!
  • What is a Health Care Assistant Caroline? Do you need formal qualifications and how would I go about becoming one?

I know it maybe doesn't count but I make wedding accesories like tiaras, wands and crystal bouquets along with some bits of jewellery for a bridal shop and my website. It is competetive but I do make a profit. I work in my bedroom and have a cupboard that i lock beads away in so kids can't get at them. I know a few people who do soaps/bathbombs/bathsalts too.

  • Dont worry - I just googled. Sounds great! But there are no vacancies in the Essex area unfortunately. Something to keep my eyes open for though.

I worked in a lovely pub restaurant when mine were small. Most have a shift that starts at 7pm.

  • What are you currently doing? Can't you get the same job but in the evening?

I work evenings 6.00 to 12.00 as a law costs draftsman at a US law firm in Central London. It's just like the middle of the day there, lawyers, legal secretaries, post room etc all working.

I have two year old triplets so look after them until my DH gets home, then go to work. I am permanently exhausted though so don't think I would recommend it. Just counting the days until they can go to preschool!

I work 12 hours a week (3 shifts 6pm-10pm) in a local chain store (not supermarket) stacking the shelves. Its not a bad job at all and it fits in well with dh getting home. The money is ok - well better than ok as I dont have to pay for child care and also cos I only work 12 hours I dont pay any tax or NI - so all that I earn I keep.

I worked there as a Christmas temp in 2009 and a few months ago they contacted me and said they had an evening job that was mine if I wanted it!

There will prob be loads of shops advertising for Christmas temps in the next few weeks and sometimes staff are kept on afterwards so might be worth keeping your eyes open in the local shops - thats how I found this one last year.

Hope you find something that works for you

How about working as a care assistant in an old peoples home? Also would suggest working in a supermarket or late night garage eg, I know the rate of pay may not be what you are used to but it can be offset against savings on childcare.
