May as well give GLARY a go too ~

    Download GLARY UTILITIES
    http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
REBOOT then run the ONE CLICK scan
Goto MODULES / SYSTEM TOOLS / WINDOWS STANDARD TOOLS / then run SYSTEM FILE CHECKER

Just tried to untick the Automatically restart box and a pop-up has appeared telling me that

"Windows cannot send administrative alerts unless the Alerter service is running."

    What does this mean?

Enter services.msc into the 'Run' option on the Start Menu. The Services window shown below will open.
Search for the ALERTER service and manually start it, and then set to start automatically (For future)

Once I've run the One Click Scan do I need to fix the problems it's found?

Also, just done the service.msc in run and I still can't find the ALERTER thing *confused*

(Forget the red circling, ALERTER is right at the top as in the example below, click NAME to put everything in alphabetical order)

'ALERTER' is a service provided with XP
If you genuinely dont have it, I would recommend formatting (Or buying that new hardrive) and reinstalling (Though clearly you dont have an operating disc, so its up to you what you do there)

My suggestion would be to start a fresh thread ~ one to format and reinstall XP (Donnie will probably help there, if hes not mad at you that is!)

Before Donnie got mad at me he did send me a PM about how to create a disc of XP so I still have that.

Where on the hard drive would I find information about what it is? Is it just printed on the top/side?

Any suggestions on good places to buy them?

I didn't get mad at you. There are just lots of other people who need help. So there is no point in wasting time with someone who doesn't appreciate it.

    Sorry Donnie.

Did you read what was posted earlier about format/reinstall of XP? Would I be able to do that with the link you sent me yesterday on a new hard drive if I was to install one?
