  • I think you have made the right decision and you know it is cos it feels gooood.
You will move to the big house one day and wont it be fantastic.
Best of luck with the overpaying.

Debt Sept 2012 £140,000 end age 65.5 (maximum) four mortgages in total
    April 2016 £114,599.83 (3 mortgages now)
Nil debt for some many years now perhaps 8. Need to save for a tent for holiday this year but nil else.
Over paying about £500 per month but fancy £600 so will have to think of some very money saving techniques...
  • Hey Cath
sounds like you are comfortable with the decision you have made , a new house and a move is always scary, stressful, exciting, but the scary and stressful I guess if it overwhelms the time once you are there just isnt worth it ...
for what its worth when I first bought my flat I overstretched myself to the max, took out a loan to pay some of the expenses and by the time I walked in the door I was about 10K in debt (not incl mortgage!) I ended up getting a second job for a while just so Id have money to buy petrol/go out a bit and it was a stressful time to say the least! ... I was lucky in that the fall in the interest rates co-incided with the end of the fixed rate and gave me some money each month to play with, but I would never get myself into that situation again, having my own home was lovely but it wouldve been even more lovely had I been able to enjoy it and not constantly worry about money ..

Something will come up at the right time for you- I am a true believer in that, and that a house can be re-vamped into more of the home we want it to be if needs be , maybe instead of rightmove (a curse and a blessing I agree! ;) ) you could get some brochures for decorating/furniture/whatever kind of things you would like to do to the house, that way if and when the right time comes to sell you have made it a lovely home in the meantime

    take care

Thanks, DH has put move on hold and the salesman wants us to have a think over the weekend. My mind is made up though. DH suddenly announced he would pay the extra nursery costs out of his personal allowance but I have never been able to get him to reduce it in the past! I just reminded him the house has never been ours and in actual fact there is a mortgage going through on in at the moment but there are some problems with whoever is wishing to buy it. Would be nice to see it on rightmove (when I'm not looking on it obviously!) SOLD STC in a few days or weeks! It would really NEVER have been ours then.

Am already trying to work out next months overpayments and if I can send anymore before payday!

I even worked out that without OP with rates as they are because we have kept our normal repayment the same £8 a month extra takes another 4 months off the mortgage - how good is that!

thanks TYO, It's not worth the overstretch is it. We have always been ruled by our mortgage and for the first time ever have more disposable income and the move would probably spiral us back to square one.

I think I may get some brochures! I have always wanted a kitchen-diner and due to layout in new house it isn't possible but couls be here. I went to a friends for a meal last night and she has the most amazing kitchen-diner which I would love to recreate here. Ultimately I want a family home - and I already have that, it's just not all new and shiny!

I think you have made right choice. Remember houseprices are funny things almost everyone is forcasting falls or stagnation which when you consider wage inflation is a fall anyway. If you had a NEED to move then its easy to justify a move or make it affordable by lengthening term etc but your move thoughts were driven by desire not need.

Howdens do some nice kitchens. :)

Exactly, we pushed ourselves to buy this property 6 years ago so we would never have to move again. When we bought this it actually came with plans for a 2 storey extension so there is loads we could do. A house round the corner has just sold and had an extension to provide a 4th bedroom which I would never have thought of so there is so much we could do.

Boiler is definitely the priority although it's gonna mess up my kitchen and utility! Some thinking to do there and whether we could get it done quite soon. Think DH and I need a nice peaceful evening with a bottle of wine and pen and paper.

Wow i'm tired today! Could it be the result of a late night or the comedown from all the house stress or due to the cold I've got. I just know I could fall asleep right now!

Haven't really achieved much today, one-poll really slow so only 10p earned there. Homewise have just done some washing, not motivated to do anything else! I did wrap a few presents while DD slept so will try to do some more later. Not too bad when you do a few at a time.

Need to finalise DH car insurance after 8th (cc cut off). I was soooo annoyed with DH as my insurance went up £80 due to his speeding ticket so I told him in a very hormonal mood that he would be paying the difference out of his personal spends. When he said 'i'll go to the cashpoint in a minute' i did feel a little guilty but have still seen no money! He also needs to cancel mobile phone contract and activate new sim and then after christmas we will reduce the sky package so lots more money to be saved in the new year!

We owe £3000 on a 0% CC so the aim is to clear most of that next year. It was almost cleared till we bought the car. I really need to get out to my car and just start it up, we haven't had much snow but last few days I have driven DH's and mine hasn't been used and is covered in ice. Just hope it hasn't seized up as DH needs to drive 18 miles out of his way tomoro to drop DD off with our friends and then I am making the same journey to pick her up when I finish work. She is really looking forward to going though.

Hope your car is OK. Mine hasn't been started since wednesday, so really need to get it started over the weekend just to make sure it's ok.

    Hope it starts yukkibear!

Am waiting for DH to come home from work and just ask him if he'll turn engine over (well, that is the hope!). Am really hoping it starts or we will be very stuck tomorrow. I do prepare for most 'what if's' though so it will be a bonus if it starts. Think DH delayed in work (that job just gets less appealing by the day), I have put food in the oven but will probably eat alone! Got DD to bed at 6:45 so this would have been a rare opportunity to have a peaceful evening!

I have actually got the extension plans out of the cupboard to have a look at what we can do. I am very happy we are staying put.
