Hotpoint failed to come on the day they said. They then said we had got the dates mixed up and he was due to come on another date (this was 8 days later than they first told us). Despite the fact we called 3 times on the day and were told he would be there before 6pm.

So I got fed up with them and bought the bearing for £10.20 off e-bay. I did the job and put it all back together... :j .

 BUT I put one of the wires back on the wrong part of the circuit board and fried it.... So let that be a lesson to you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so annoyed, It was a brilliant repair up until the last connector. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHh

So now I think I will get a new one anyway. I noticed that some of the parts were worn, so I bet it would have gone another year at best anyway (consoling myself)

So I am thinking of getting a Miele or Siemens, perhaps an LG, but something decent.......... Any thoughts?

We have to buy another one about every 5 years. We had a repair man out to our first one which had 5 year guarantee and he said they dont even have to make the spares after 5 years. The same machine only kept going about another 6 months after the repair and that was that.
Dont know why the US machines are so much more reliable but on US forums you often see people say their machine is 10years old and going strong.

My brother worked as a service engineer for AEG for years.
He says 3 to 5 years life is typical for the averaged priced machine.
This bears out my own experience.

Next time ours dies i will be looking at John Lewis own make which come with a 3 year guarentee.

MAYTAG (USA) used to have an advert over there that showed the repair man, bored and sitting in his office covered in cobwebs and stuff, watching for the phone to ring.
