Is it worth fixing a washing machine or just buy a new one?

  • Replace .... we had a bearing go in our machine . When we worked out he cost per day over the years we'd had it , it was something like 50p a day or something ludicrous. We've had a John lewis machine , good warranty + their own brands are made by someone famous like AEG or Zanussi anyway. Treat yourself !!

I am smiling reading your question
because we had an Indesit 1200 spin
ours broke down down,it was 11 years old
the first time we ever had a problem, but
thought,ah we have had our moneys worth.

    We went for a replacement.

On the day we were getting rid of
our old machine one of our neighbours
asked if she could have it,she was with
her father in law I told him what I thought
was wrong,he bought new brush heads for
it £10.17 inc VAT.I just thought well good
luck to them if they get a year or two out
of it all well and good.

They were a young couple with a new baby
and not much money coming in.Imagine my
surprise bumping into the same girl seventeen
years later, now a mum of two teenage girls
and still doing the family wash in that same
    machine I was threw out.

I wish I could say I still had the machine
I bought to replace it,that one lasted
    about four years.

Get a new one. Of all the machines to go wrong the washing machine is the none I dread. Not very eco friendly but at least a new one is likely to work for a while
  • Bearings on a hotpoint are by far one of the easiest machines to do that specific job on.

All you need is the following tools:

    Philips Screwdriver
    Adjustable wrench/Spanner
    Hammer
Metal chisel or similar no thicker than an inch

The drum comes out from the front on these machines, if you want me to guide you further, let me know.

    Haynes have a
    washing machines manual
    you could always borrow
    it from your local libray.
    Or just photo copy the
    relevant pages.

I would go for new. The drum shaft may be damaged as well as the bearings so it is not worth the hassle.

The front??? I thought he whole drum comes out of the top? Lots of things to remove.... Any help would be appreciated. I am pretty handy, but tips save lots of time and cut fingers

Just bought a Bosch washing machine today from Dixons online for £228.99. Cheapest price I could find for this machine by far.
Went through Quidco and £8.01 has tracked already.
My old machine is knackered, about 8years old. Didn't even consider getting it repaired.
  • I am just set right now to purchase a washing machine (hence looking at this thread). My main concern was whether the washing machine has a standard warranty period of one year. After reading this thread I feel reassured. I guess they wouldnt sell you something with no kind of garuntee. Anyway, in case other people are looking, kelkoo are not the be all and end all for price comparision. It failed to spot that dixons have a good un on offer at £159

Think I am gonna go for that
Matched betting profit since 11th June 2006: £613.88

All should have a 1 yr warantee. Many offer a 5yr parts warantee, BUT they will charge you about £90 for call out, but there will be no more on top of that.

I see ASDA are selling washing machines. They offer a 3 year no fuss guarantee on their stuff (even mobile phones 1 yr). So may be it's woth checking as see if they have a 3yr guaratee on their washers?

I still have not decided what to do and it's still noisy in my kitchen.
