Is it worth fixing a washing machine or just buy a new one?

I'd try to fix it myself. Washing machines aren't generally that complicated. (I wouldn't actually do it myself because I'm renting so it would be the landlord's problem but if it was my washing machine then I would.)0

Given the inconvenience that a broken down washing machine causes, after five years I would not repair it, I would replace it. In fact, I would probably replace it after four years. Washing machines which break down are a pet hate of mine which I'm sure cause me more domestic strife than anything else. . . . . I think . . . .
Any way, GET A NEW ONE!1 -

A whole history of bulletin board postings about a variety of things washing machine related. I managed to fix our washing machine using it, and I'm techno-phobic.
Edited to say it appears to have changed design, but should (hopefully) still contain the excellent advice I found on it. Maybe not in the bulletin boards though, you may have to look at the rest of the site.0 -
Can I recommend that if you are getting rid of it, to offer it on freecycle, someone mmight be more willing to repair it than you, or to your local furniture refurbishing network so it can be reconditioned for others in need:beer: Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
Thanks for all the advice.
Both to buy new and to repair. We use the washer a lot, at least 2 loads a day and we have probably overloaded it everytime. So it has not done bad really. It still works, but the bearing is so noisy that we have to leave the room :rotfl: The 5 year parts guarantee is useless anyway as the parts may be free but Hotpoint send their engineer out for £89, no matter what the part is to replace.
I could fix a bearing easy enough, but this model has no removeable back! So you have to take off most of the parts and then pull the whole drum out through the top of the machine to get at it. My only fear is that I won't be able to put it back together again...
So perhaps the best thing might be to buy a new one. Then try and fix the old one and give it away if it works.
Or buy a new one from ASDA say, fix the old one and then return the new one to ASDA with some feeble excuse and get my money back!!! No that would not be right.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Just wanted to say that we have the same problem, noisy baring and came on here to find either a way offixing it or where to get a bargin.
Only thing is our washing machine is 14 years old, don't feel half as bad.0 -
I replaced the bearings on my Creda washer/drier years ago and it was a similar type where the drum had to be completely removed to replace the bearings. This was not an easy job and took me over a day. Bearings cost a fair bit and friend who is a washing machine engineer warned me that the repair would only last 6 - 18 months and it was likely that the drum would need replacing too.
Check out the price of the bearings before deciding anything - they can be very expensive - may make your mind up for you :-)PLEASE DO NOT STEAL

i change my washing machine every 3 years. £200 for a new one, and some mug always buys the old one for £100. So £33 per year for a washing machine, cant be bad. Never had to fix a machine since i was 18 doing it this way, so 17 years never having to get a machine fixed
Even better was bnq had their machines 1/2 price reduced to clear, so got a machine for £100 and sold the old one for £100, meaning free for the next three yearsgo on, adopt a greyhound
