Maybe refund their food costs, if you haven't already bought it all of course. As for the charter costs I would encourage them to explore the subject of very late cancellation with their travel insurance company and if they took the risk of no insurance then tough.

This '£21' wouldn't even be coming out of the remaining peoples pockets - the ones who left paid it into the kitty for the holiday food, assuming it hasn't been spent on food already then it's their own money they are getting back.

  • I'd pretty musch agree with what everyone else has said. 10 people paid £250 each, so £2500 to charter the boat. That cost is fixed whether there's less of you or not, so I wouldn't return any money from their £250 they paid (would the charter company refund you a portion of the £2500?, I think not).
The money for food is the only area for consideration. If the food has already been purchased, then the money has been spent and a refund of any sort would be in-appropriate, unless they were to take their share of food with them. If the food money has not already been committed then divide the £50 by the number of days the voyage was scheduled to take, subtract the number of days they actually stayed for and refund the remainder. So they only pay the food bill on a pro-rata basis, no-one loses out that way.
If you were to keep their £50 food money and it hasn't been spent, what are you going to do with it? presumably split it with the remaining people on the voyage? That sounds like a bad plan, you all committed to spending £300 each when you set out.
  • Was the £50 each for food, solely for food? On every charter I've done, once the charter cost is covered by all participants then an additional equal contribution is made by all on board to cover the additional costs which includes any diesel used when conditions dictate unsuitable for sailing, mooring/anchoring/marina charges etc. and food/drinks purchased for onboard use.
If your trip was calculated the same way then I would say no refunds to be given.
The charges for 'parking' a large 10 berth yacht overnight or motoring to the next harbour due to lack of wind would still cost the same whether there are 10 or 2 people on board so why should those on board have their contribution hiked up by the deserters that perhaps could have shown a little more 'team-player' mentality.
  • If the food/drinks have already been bought, then no way. It's their choice to leave early.
But if there is some remaining cash, divide that between 9 people and give the three who left their share. Why should those remaining have a worse holiday because of 3 people who seem to be a bit arsey...

I assume the £50 people are suggesting giving to the 3 who left is a 'refund' on the food money they put in the kitty? If so then i think it is fair to give them this back out of the moeny they put in. If you mean that each of the remaining guests would give the guests who left £50 because they chose to leave the holiday early then no, i wouldn't stump up the cash at all, this basically means the remaining 6 people would give £150 each? No, No, No!

Each person paid £300 each (£250 for boat + £50 for food). I think it is fair to give back any money which hasn't been committed e.g. if the food money has been put in a kitty and hasn't been spent or if some of the food could be returned for a refund. If the remaining 7 people will be paying out of their own pocket to give back money to the rest then that feels wrong. Also depends on what attitude the 3 friends left in, did they leave in a big grumpy mood demanding their money back? Or was it left in relatively good spirit knowing they'd forfeited the money they've put in.

Whilst I agree it only £21 per person from the group of 7 to refund the group of 3 £50 each, it's also the principle of it. If they demanded/asked for the money then they're not good friends and thus why refund the money to people who are not good friends. If they didn't demand/ask for money back then they are good friends and a gesture of good will could be a nice thing.

I agree with most of the postings - they left so therefore they forfeit the money. If they were abroad and decided to leave early they would loose their payment, and have to stump up for an early flight home....

    dont pay, its the principle.

How does this sit with your closing banner - SuzySF
  • Nah Nah Nah!!!!

They chose to leave early so dont give anything. I certainly wouldn't give a penny nor would I expect any money to be refunded to me if I chose to leave early.
  • Absolutely NOT! When you booked the holiday the cost was agreed between you. If someone wants to back out it is up to them and they should bear the cost.
