Money Moral Dilemma: Should we pay for their cut-short holiday?

It doesn't sound as if the three who jumped ship gave any indication that they expected any refund, which is commendable on their part. They are described as 'friends' and from the information supplied seem to have behaved as such. So why are you considering giving them £117 (7 x £50 divided by 3) each back?
The charter cost should surely be sacrosanct, as it is quite likely at least one of the remaining seven may not have 'signed up' if the cost was over £250 - so no refund warranted there!
Presumably the £50 for food has been paid in advance and one of the remaining seven is holding the kitty. Perhaps some of the kitty was spent on the first day but, almost certainly, all of it wasn't and those who left MUST each be refunded a tenth of what remains; or a little more if what was purchased is usable by those remaining. If it wasn't paid in advance and they left before paying then then they might have offered a contribution for anything already spent but, apart from that, the matter wouldn't appear to justify any discussion at all, between friends! The remaining crew members would not, in fact, be contributing any of their money to such a refund from the food kitty.0 -
If there was any "food money" left at the end of the trip meet up with the early leavers for a meal (paid for using the cash) to show them the holiday snaps and what they misssed!0

I agree with most of the postings - they left so therefore they forfeit the money. If they were abroad and decided to leave early they would loose their payment, and have to stump up for an early flight home....
dont pay, its the principle. What goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
If you'd already bought the food, that's their tough - the money was spent and you'd be out of pocket if you gave back their money.
If you'd not bought the food give them their money back - after all, they're not going to eat the food that was going to be bought, so you're not out of pocket.
The only reason for keeping the money if it hadn't been spent would be to make a quick buck off your friends. Not right, and not friendship.0 -
Next time I book a holiday and the weather isn't good then remind me to go back to the travel agent to get some of my money back...
If the money has been spent on food then give them a share of the food. If it hasn't then give them the share of the food money...
Simple!0 -
As you say, it was their choice to leave early. If it was me I would have sat out the bad weather and stayed. Did the friends that went home ask for the £50? if they did then maybe give it to them but if they didn't then leave it as it is! It's not worth ruining a friendship over £50 so do what your instincts tell you are right! Good Luck!Debt owed £4000, Saved (to pay back) £300, only £3,700 to go!!
My best money saving tip: Good manners cost NOTHING! So please be nice to each other! :happylove0 -
It depends. If the money was held in a float it seems reasonable to give each one a ninth of what was remaining after the first day. If however, the food has already been bought then no, it is too late for them to expect to be reimbursed. You pays your money and you makes your choice! They probably had a say in what food was bought.
The moral of the story? Discuss before going!0 -
Unless the friends particularly asked for their money back, I wouldn't be inclined to pay them. After all, if you had paid for an all-inclusive package holiday and became ill, the tour operator wouldn't refund you for the meals you weren't able to consume while you were feeling off-colour.
However, for the sake of friendship, I'd offer them half of their food money back, because they must have eaten something on the first day. That said though, they really shouldn't have committed themselves to a sailing holiday if they couldn't hack it after only one day!

Dont go sailing if you dont like windy weather and let your mates down. They were prob looking forward to spending their time with you. Pay up.0

It is a yacht. Chances are they already bought most of the food and only stopped to buy perishables. So if they want to leave early I would give them a bottle of wine already purchased each and tin of beans or whatever they bought and send them on their way.
If they didn't already purchased all of the food, I would deduct the bills already paid and give them share of the money left back.
Nothing more.
It would be nice to go on holiday with mates and get money back if the weather is not nice, risk free holiday and mates have more expensive holidays then expected!! Cool isn't it - if someone is thinking like that, I wouldn't want them to be my mates anyway.0
