actually, when I came on here, i liked the newcomers bit in the title - made me feel like I would be welcome - whereas I would have felt I was intruding if I went straight into the Inn - it did seem a bit cliquey...even though I know now that its not. (does that make sense??)
No one knows who were are in real life, and anything we say could be true or could be made up - or a bit of both - who knows. I have experienced another forum years ago, where things got very bad because people don't understand the nature of forum life, and get upset, or take offence where none was intended, or conversely, say hurtful things just because they can.
Some examples -
1)
This is not MSN - you don't always get an instant reply, and indeed, if others are replying to previous posts, it may APPEAR that your post is being ignored. This may or may not be the case. If you think someone has an 'issue' with you or your posts, you could try asking them - the worst that can happen is they don't reply then you at least know they are igoring you!! (sorry, I don't mean that to sound flippant)
which leads me onto
2)
It is impossible to tell from a written piece how it was intended to be read - for example - for goodness sake!! could be someone exasperated, angry, frustrated or laughing something off - if you don't know the tone, inflection and body language associated with the words, its hard to understand, and very easy to MISUNDERSTAND
3)
by the very nature, people are posting about things they feel passionate about, for whatever reason - how many of us are members of forums for belly button gazing?? Put people with strong feelings together, and sparks will fly on occasion - the trick is to be nice, and try to consider the other person when you reply to their message. If necessary, type, delete and retype something less 'prickly'
4)
the reader - some of us (me included) have or have had mental health issues. This affects how you see things - you are looking for people to be unpleasant, because if (as I did) you have anxiety, stress and depression, this is how it physically affects your mind. You cannot help it, and you cannot snap out of it. Therefore some of us may be more sensitive than others - and may be upset by things which others don't find a problem.
5)
the poster - all the same can apply, you can often post in the heat of the moment, and then wish you hadn't - by which time someone has been upset, or replied and your message is out there.
OK, sorry to go on, but anyways, what I am saying is, I have found help and support on this forum,
