If it's not got fur growing on it, I'd use it. Most of those things are so packed with spices which act as preservatives and will keep going almost indefinitely.

Me too Allegra, I'm rubbish at adhering to dates though and tend to sniff it, if it smells/looks ok it gets eaten lol.

Hi Bramble I have been lurking, your doing really well, im impressed that you are going for a second month now:)

    thank you!!

Just popped a victoria sponge in the oven! i was going to do chocolate brownies but we don't have enough chocolate! so sponge it is, oh and popped some jelly to set in the fridge for OH to snack on.

Think i shall have an omlette for lunch, better go see the chickens tomorrow a stock up on more eggs. It's amazing the rate we get through them, we are trying to make more use of them, so we've been having scrambled or boiled eggs for breaksfast if we have time, and omlettes if we're home for lunch. that way we can use the bulk of our store foods for creating dinners.

  • Can't remember if you've got a slow cooker or not. But today I'm making slow-cooker pulled pork and having with BBQ sauce, corn on the cobs and coleslaw. For that I used a cheap shoulder of pork joint.

Have you got a favourite recipe for the pulled pork and BBQ sauce?
  • been looking for ages for recipes to make use of crab apples

made some crab apple jelly last year and still have several jars left,so didn't want to do any more of that

found this, which looked interesting. It is an old English recipe called Char de Crabb. http://www.celtnet.org.uk/recipes/mediaeval/fetch-recipe.php?rid=medi-to-make-char-de-crabb have put the full link, as sometimes the script on the page has to be cancelled because it is stopping my browser from running

To make Char de Crabb (To Make a Crabapple Pie) is a traditional Medieval recipe for a classic apple and honey pie thickened with breadcrumbs. The full recipe is presented here and I hope you enjoy this classic Medieval version of: To Make a Crabapple Pie (To make Char de Crabb).

I picked 500g crab apples, and simmered them in a tbslp of water until really soft, then pushed them through a sieve. I didn't want to use honey as too expensive, but had some Jaggery (palm sugar) in cupboard which has been in there forever, so used 100g of that.

The mixture was still mouthwateringly tart, so put in 100g ord sugar as well.

200g breadcrumbs seemed a lot for the little pan of apple puree, so I added 100g first, tasted it, then added the 2nd 100g.

By now it was a thick mix, so added 120ml water

Have lots of star anise, so ground up 2 of those to a powder, and stirred them in

Result is a delicious powerfully appley mix. It has quite a strong lemon flavour from the crabapples, and an undertone of aniseed from the star anise. Don't think you can taste the jaggery, so would just use ord sugar next time. Honey would prob taste really fine, but would increase the cost a lot.

I'll put it in a pastry case as per the recipe and bake it and let you know how it turns out.

Mix would be fab with yogort, cream, ice cream, prob on toast (would be best on buttery toast I think), in buttery puff pastry turnovers, in little pastry cases like jam tarts, all kinds of things

I will def be making another kilo of crab apples worth and freezing it, don't have room for any more.

    wow that sounds good!

I am having a kitchen disaster day. one of my sponges got stuck, so wouldn't come out the tin and is now in 2 halves...never fear, that can be the bottom of the sponge!

my omlette turned into a scrambled egg cheese type concoction!

in light of these disasters i will not be using the old curry paste as it can only mean something will go wrong.

Things have got a bit dire for me this week, so am thinking I need to meal plan for this week too, or try and pick up some reduced meat at Sainsbury's. The problem with doing that is you have to be there about 6.30pm, and my DS is hungry by then and doesn't want to be standing in Sainsburys. This is when the arguing starts.

Although I got some real bargains from doing it last week.

I have sausages, bacon and mushrooms, courgette, carrots and a few potatoes. And Mince in the freezer, 2 packets, but hoping to only making one meal and save the other one for another time.

I don't eat a lot of meat, am trying to encourage DS to for his diet, and always thought DH needed a lot of meat because he liked it, but have realised lately, if I bulk his plate out with a lot of veg, he is quite happy to eat less meat.

    So will go with that.

Just thinking what interesting dinner I can make with sausage, bacon, courgette, carrots, mushrooms, oh eggs, without having to buy more ingredients.

you could do a breakfast style dinner with the bacon sausage mushroom and fried or paoched egg with a grated courget and carrot rosti?

    Or a fritata?

I like the idea of a frittata. Mind go for that. DS might eat it too then, he is going through that phase of not wanting to eat anything I give him.
