Fab pic LizzieB! You are an inspiration to me! We are going to have a tough few months coming up so am trying to stock up on bargains wherever I can, so that we can make it through Dec and Jan.

I know people are on no spends but there is a Tesco 1p thread, and I have "fingers crossed" managed to buy 20 bags of roast coffee for 1p each! They can be stored, and should last us quite a while!

Bags are always good - eco friendly and useful. Potato and onion bags are good too, and very useful as they keep both dark and fresh. Easy too - school 'pump bag' type shape with a drawstring at the top. Lakeland has them at the moment for £5.95 so you make them at a fraction of the price!

Have a good afternoon - am off to watch the unforgettable Keith Floyd and dream of my idyllic escape (more on that soon...!)

Can I ask what you make the bags from? I keep my potatoes in a basket in a cupboard at the moment but always wondered whether these 'magic' bags were worth it.

Enjoy hobbycraft - my DS is booking her wedding venue tomorrow and I imagine that is somewhere where I shall definitely be visiting on a regular basis. I'm making up a sample of a satin rose bouquet for her as she is planning opulence on a budget!. I am hoping to stud each rose centre (we are looking around 50) with a swarofski-type crystal and include some form of pearl/other gem drapes over and around the bouquet. Will post a picture if it looks any good!

As a cheapie idea Lizzie: I went to a wedding two weeks ago and the flower theme was tight cream roses with a single pearl-ended dressmaking pin poked in the centre of each one. Looked very effective and much cheaper than a crystal I'd have thought. Table decorations were said roses, hand tied in a bunch in a cheap Ikea plain glass sort of rectangular vase. Looked great.

I got enough to make 10 cards (which sorts out immediate family) so going to sit down and do them tomorrow. Didn't manage any cooking yet! picked up kitten, made a pit stop to see my brother, and then to him new family who loved him. Feels nice to do a good thing! ended up staying there a while, then went to tescos and have JUST got home, so have poured myself a glass of wine ...naughty... OH is still out, but i'm exhausted so might wait till tomorrow to cook.

The ones with silver lids were from Asda, couple of years back now - I don't know if they still have them, I've not seen them for a little while but my local Asda does not carry the full range, so they might still have them in bigger stores.

The tall ones with red lids were initially begged from an old-style sweetie shop (they held lollipops) and then scrounged by me once they outlived their usefulness there :)

Aureol - bless ya :) 20 bags of coffee for 1p each? You are the current bargain queen!!!! :)

Maman, I use a dark medium weight cotton canvas as it keeps the light out but seems to let the veg breathe. However, I must admit that at the moment there are several kilo of onions in a box in the bottom of my wardrobe :o I run a 'cool' house so they aren't sprouting yet!

Pearl pin idea sounds great - thank you! Sis is off to a wedding fayre with mom tomorrow, and then to book venue. Fingers crossed she gets what she wants at the right price.

Allegra - I want to go to right now and tidy up the kitchen cupboards to take more photos! Your set looks fab and SO ORGANISED :D however, I have had a couple of 'small' glasses of homemade wine (getting towards the end of the batch :( ) so if you would like me to I will do that tomorrow (more fun than marking work! ;))
Sometimes, I can't see the wood for the trees - or the couscous for the quinoa... 3 no spends so far for August 2011!

    .

Someone here suggested dark coloured pillow cases for potato storage the other day. I'm going to look for navy or burgundy Value ones next time I'm in the £££ shop or Asda.

The other place I've seen really cheap pillowcases was in Ikea...39p for a sort of calico one. They're unbleached cream so no good for spuds but I think they'd be excellent for onions.

  • I have been lurking on this fantastic thread for a while after having found myself in a similar position this month. However, Allegra and Lizzie - your fab storage photos have bought me out of lurkdom and I have to give you both a big :T
So neat as well! My store cupboards are overflowing but very random. You've both inspired me to go and tidy them up now!

  • I use an old yellow pillowcase for my pots and they are fine - don't buy a special pillowcase just use an old one.
