Thanks folks, as wire coat hanger wasn't working and I couldn't get my hand in far enough (not pleasant!), tried mop. Worked brilliantly. Thank you.

I've not come across a blocked toilet yet that cannot be cleared by pouring a bag of salt down and flushing. (Not that I spend my whole life coming acorss blocked toilets you understand)
I know this is an old thread but it worked like a miracle for me.
    Buying 5kg of salt tomorrow.
  • Get a mop, wrap mop-head in a plastic bag to keep it clean, then use as you would a plunger. With a few deep plunges the toilet will unblock. :j

If you want a really clean loo that looks like new do what my dear dad did years ago. Put two types of cleaner down loo, ignoring the warnings not to mix A with B. Stand back to avoid fumes, swear at big bang when toilet bowl cracks, phone plumber and get new loo. Not mse but i did get a lovely bouquet once for sending in the story to a mag for their home disasters section rofl. I personally use the two plastic bags over a loo brush method. So far has worked every time.

  • I have used the mop and plastic bag method in the past but it was a disgusting job!

There is a liquid toilet unblocker which worked really well for me. It was around £7 which obviously isn't as cheap as other options but I think it was worth it for the convenience. :money:

(I couldn't remember the name but just googled 'liquid toilet unblocker' and it came up). It's called Toilet Ninja. If that stuff doesn't work it's probably time to call a plumber!

2 litre pop bottle with bottom cut off, lid on and use as plunger works for me every time.
  • There are always things to do when moving into a new place, but unblocking a stubborn toilet is not one you would expect! The one in my new flat appeared to be constantly blocked! Instead of flushing away, the water level would rise to be just centimeters from the rim, ready to spill on to the floor! :(

I would spend hours scooping dirty water into a bucket and then shoving augers and even hose pipes down the pan. These would sometimes shift and clear it but not enough: just use the loo a couple of times and the water level would again rise, ever closer to the rim!

It got to the point when the water level would hardly go down an inch even overnight! Finally I bought Am-Tech's Doctor Drain! This is a plunger that drives a large amount of air down a blocked pipe! It was the last throw before paying for a so-called pro who would charge the earth. Am-Tech's Doctor Drain was just what the plumber ordered: shove it into the loo, push the lever down a couple of time and it's cleared as if by magic! The water level is back to normal. Normal usage is now resumed! :T

Am-Tech's Doctor Drain! Check it out on Amazon where it can be bought for less that £5! :rotfl:
  • If you have to use the old fashioned "hand down the sink" then just put your arm into a strong black binliner and go for it. Afterwards your hand is nice and clean and dry. :D Turn the bag inside out as you remove your hand and dispose of.

Also used the mop as a plunger in the past to good effect.

Washing up liquid helps things slide along too....

I just tried the mop technique and ended up with the mop head becoming detached from the long handle. Never mind I thought it will still do the trick - until the carrier bag containing the mop head started disappearing down the toilet! Have been warned off using plungers by a plumber previously as he said it can cause problems with the lock-fit fixings so haven't dared try it. Have suggested OH uses boiling water as I'm at work now - he's worried it might melt the sealant.
