So what's your better, water tight solution?

There is only one way, if it's paid for with Paypal it has to be sent by Paypal approved trackable delivery, if they want to collect, it can't be paid for with Paypal if you as the seller want any protection.

That message you sent them wouldn't have bothered me at all!

Their own dozy fault for not being able to read where it said CASH ON COLLECTION.

I was selling something once and said cash on colection only. The buyer paid with Paypal, so I refunded and sent a note similar to the OP, where they were happy to come and pay with cash. They said that they only paid with Paypal straight away as they really wanted it and wanted me to know they weren't going to muck me about with collecting it but they understood where I was coming from.

It all depends how Paranoid you are. I work on the theory that 99% of buyers on ebay are honest. If not I wouldn't be selling. In my 10 years or so on ebay I have had nothing that has told me otherwise.

If the buyer was a Scammer I very much doubt the response would have been so annoyed at their honesty being questioned. A scammer would have more than likely not replied. Also the buyer had 2000 FB so I very much doubt a scammer.

    But why would the buyer pay by PP after the seller has specifically stated cash on collection? The OP says;

"After the item sold I wrote to the buyer a message with our address so he knew were to collect (he lives 10min drive from us) and I asked for cash on collection in my message."

So the buyer still paid by PP even after OP had requested cash on collection, that would ring alarm bells to me as well as the fact that the buyer is not contactable by phone. What if the "buyer" has hacked into the account of someone with a really good ebay rating?

I think I would do the same as the OP and err on the side of caution on this one.

My way is fool proof, I just don't sell high end or items likely to be scammed on ebay unless I can get a courier to accept them and have a postal option.

I do risk some cheaper items but am prepared to lose my money if i get scammed.

    e.

That's easy, for high end goods some people may prefer to put it on a credit card via paypal and pay it off over time rather than pay it all in one go.

The other answer would be 'because they can'.

If the below statements are wrong, please let me know. It would certainly make my life easier if I could (legitimately) insist on cash only for collected items:
    1. Whatever the wording on a listing, as a specific term of listing our items, I believe eBay directs that we MUST offer Paypal as a method of payment. Am I right?
    2. If Paypal must be offered as a method of payment for the duration of a listing, how can anyone refuse to accept it after the listing ends? (Regardless of listing description).
    3. If the buyer wishes to pay by Paypal and the seller refuses to accept this, wouldn’t it be the seller who has breached the terms and conditions, not the buyer?
    4. If the buyer runs to eBay and Paypal, correctly informing them (with evidence) that a seller is refusing to accept Paypal, surely the obvious verdict will be that the seller is in the wrong.
If my understanding is correct, as things stand, if the buyer insists on paying via Paypal and collection, I can’t see how a seller can wriggle out of those terms, unless they want to (at best) lose the sale and the selling fees or (at worst) face ‘naughty step’ punishment from Paypal and eBay.

    Your statements are correct,

If a seller refuses to take paypal they are likely to end up with:
    1. a non performing seller complaint
    2. a neg
    3. FVFs still to be paid
    4. wasted listing fees
A seller cannot refuse paypal (except in the motor vehicle category), they cna offer cash on collection but must not even say they prefer it.

Soolin, many thanks - that's crystal clear. I actually asked paypal exactly the same questions and got only evasive non-answers that were unrelated to the questions!

The official paypal stance is that it is not a suitable payment method for items that are collected and they advise against using it in those circumstances. They 'should' not have a view or be able to make any statements about what ebay do or do not say about payment methods.
