A question for Soolin or anyone else who uses the ebay boards a lot & one that I've been pondering for some time.
As Paypal will only accept online tracking, does that mean that it has to be scanned with an actual scanner like Parcel couriers & RM use? Or could each collection item be given a unique number by the seller, both in their listings & on the invoice sent through to the buyer. If the buyer then chooses to pay by Paypal this could then be signed by the collector scanned & uploaded? Most people have 3 in 1 printers or scanners now & if not they're pretty cheap to buy.
I'm sure that someone will have tried it but just in case I've had my Eureka moment, I thought that I'd throw it out there.
If it is one of my more random stupid ideas, I'll blame someone else, the dog seems the likliest one.
If it's a good idea I would like to bask in your praise & thanks.

Paypal have a list of approved carriers, usually most of the 'usual' courers plus RM. I assume the definition is that it must go through a verified third party, such as DHL, paypal are not an escrow company and do not act as the third party. They only need to check in the event of a dispute, the extra work involved in dealing with every case would be silly.

Actually the simple answer is the tracking needs to show delivery at the address registered as 'ok to send' by paypal so the suggestion fails at the first hurdle I'm afraid.

Thank you for your paypal payment, I have this morning however refunded you.
I kindly asked for Cash on Collection.
Last time I accepted Paypal on a collection item I got tricked. The buyer put in a claim they never received the item and I had no proof of postage since they collected the item. Paypal voted in their favour and the buyer had their money back and my item.
If you wish to go through with the purchase I hope you understand my situation and can accept the cash on collection request.
    Yours sincerely,

    and had this in reply

no thank you i have never had such a reply or my honesty questioned,i am shocked no i do not want it now....

Sigh... I guess I need to brush up on my writing skills and my manners
I'm not surprised the buyer was a bit peeved that message would rub anyone up the wrong way.

Personally I would have said something along the lines. That you would prefer Cash on collection and you are willing to give a discount for this due to the lack of PP fees. It also means that they as the buyer can check the item out before handing of their hard earned cash.

If you state things like that it's to the buyers advantage you are more likely to get them on your side rather than basically telling them you don't trust them

    What he said ^

If they live 10 mins down the road I probably wouldn't personally be too worried that they were going to scam me (and if they did they'd be getting a visit).

Or, looking at it from another POV buyer realised that seller was wise to the scam?

It all depends how Paranoid you are. I work on the theory that 99% of buyers on ebay are honest. If not I wouldn't be selling. In my 10 years or so on ebay I have had nothing that has told me otherwise.

If the buyer was a Scammer I very much doubt the response would have been so annoyed at their honesty being questioned. A scammer would have more than likely not replied. Also the buyer had 2000 FB so I very much doubt a scammer.

Thought that it would go down as one of my more stoopid ones.

Just to add, in general, I'd say embrace and harvest local buyers (I live in a rural area so don't get too many of them lol). One I did have recently bought something for his house, which I dropped off in person as I pass his house every week. I discovered he was in the middle of a major refit, and since then I have sold him something else (for cash, off eBay) each and every week :D

  • The only 100% answer I can think of is having a hidden digital camera record the item being picked up!
That might help if you have to go to court, but it wouldn't win you a PayPal dispute!
