I sent them this message which I thought was nicely written

Thank you for your paypal payment, I have this morning however refunded you.
I kindly asked for Cash on Collection.
Last time I accepted Paypal on a collection item I got tricked. The buyer put in a claim they never received the item and I had no proof of postage since they collected the item. Paypal voted in their favour and the buyer had their money back and my item.
If you wish to go through with the purchase I hope you understand my situation and can accept the cash on collection request.
    Yours sincerely,

    and had this in reply

no thank you i have never had such a reply or my honesty questioned,i am shocked no i do not want it now....

Sigh... I guess I need to brush up on my writing skills and my manners

Well, to be honest you were badly advised. Did you really get scammed? You didn't mention that in your opening post.

Ability to do something does not mean they were going to actually do it.

Could you not get a quote for a courier delivery, then reply to the seller saying that you didn't mean to offend them, but the price they paid was for cash on collection only, but if they would like to pay via paypal, then you will re-invoice them for £X which includes courier delivery, as paypal require a tracking number for paypal payments.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I did write back and apologized, offending them was never my intention.

I'm just gonna leave it. Writing has never been my strong point. I'm not British so having to worry about grammar, spelling, translating what I want to say and then make sure I don't insult people is just doing my head in now.

Thank you everyone for your advise, help and suggestions and I mean it in the nicest possible way :)

But the seller stated they only accept cash on collection. I had the same problem once on a item that was won for a £1 and the buyer paid by paypal. I refunded them and they paid cash on collection without a problem.

I hardly think they would be scamming anyone for £!.00!!

Fine until you get a few negs or claims for NPS. It's not a good strategy for selling long term on Ebay.

You can sod Ebay's rules at if you like, but I'd rather keep selling.

Thanks but i'm doing just fine being as i've been selling for 10yrs now and run a pretty profitable business.

Ebay have a grey area when it comes to collection only items, they wont help you out at all.
If someone wont pay cash i'd quote them for a courier simple.

Not so simple really is it as you can't change from a collection only to a posted item after auction has finished.

Obviously you can do whatever you want, anything at all, you can insist after auction ends that buyer pays in only coins minted in 2003, however, it doesn't alter the fact that if buyer pays and you refund you lose your FVfs as you can't do an NPB, you lose the listing fee, you'll probbaly get a neg and a non performiing seller complaint.

Probably best not to use ebay at all and concentrate on Gumtree or the small ads only for items that can't be posted, or apply some statistical thought to this and ask what items are likely to be scammed and which are not and maybe just allow the terms of the auction to stand. I have sold a few things at around the £10 mark collection only and some were paid by paypal and i gambled that I was unlikely to be scammed and in fact it all went well.

For dearer items I can't post at all I just try and sell elsewhere, much better that getting myself in a tangle and lose all my money in fees before I even start. As this item was obviously dearer than my £10 (or so)Limit I probably wouldn't have listed it on ebay. However the OP did so OP you must have had plan B as to what you would do if buyer wasn't prepared to pay cash, or were you happy just to write off your fee money?

I've been using eBay for some years and have encountered most scams, but hadn't considered the scenario of a buyer collecting and then denying that they ever collected!

In the past, I have sold collected items for several hundred pounds, so I guess I've been lucky. The only 100% answer I can think of is having a hidden digital camera record the item being picked up!

It's certainly an unhealthy reflection on society that this precaution is necessary, but other than lose sales, what else can you do?

I'm not lowering the price. I sold it £10 cheaper than anyone else to ensure a quick sell and avoid posting the item

So it was a buy it now at a price you decided on then? Or did it it just sell for what someone was prepared to pay?
