Thank you for this thread, it's given me loads of ideas! :) I'm at uni and can't afford to go out that much or buy expensive presents so these all seem like great ideas that can fill up some of my spare time (my weekends are so boring) and make really fun, inexpensive presents for people!

I've started making my mum a scarf, I decided I wanted to have a go at knitting for the first time yesterday so had a little practice and then off I went, it's going well so far but I'm a bit worried that the colour is a bit horrible :-/ She has a light green coat so it's to go with that and I'm going to put some tassles on at the end. This is it so far:

Even if she doesn't like it, she can keep it as my first ever finished knitting project! Or I can make her a different one once my skills are a bit more advanced!

I'm going to try and make a sock monkey to go with my dad's present and I'm going to make mini hampers for my uni flatmates :) Just need to think about what to put in them!

I'm not going fully handmade like some of you but I'd like to have more of a personal touch to my presents!

Your Mum will love the scarf, because you have spent time making it just for her. Learnt a new skill to boot! My 11yr old has bought me a necklace that I will treasure because this is the first year she has decided on the present, and gone out and purchased it all by herself.

    Keep it up Sapphireeye.

  • Have a look at Martha Stewarts site (sorry can't post links yet). Loads of great ideas, search for Winter Bark, cheap, stunning, delicious and packaging can be printed, make it every year now.

Also made the BBC Good Food fruity Christmas Biscotti experimentally yesterday and worked a treat.I put them in a large Ikea glass jar with a star on, they looked fab.
  • Well, after a couple of evenings cutting, and all morning sewing, I have 2 stockings finished and the other 7 cut out. I should get at least one more made this afternoon before I need to tidy up, now that I have the worst parts figured out.

  • hi everyone im loving all the ideas i have made some snowmen soup today but was wondering how everyone filled the bags up so neatly as a couple seem 2 go bit wrong??? the hot choc was all over sides on 1st ones so wondered all your techniques xx x
  • hi i always put my hot choc in a seperate bag inside the bag with everything else. hope that helps

  • I got Snowmen mugs from poundland and some cello bags (square bottom ones as that's what i all ready had) pushed the bags into the mug to mould them, then spooned in the hot choc, (wider top so was easy) then added choc buttons then filled up with marshmallows, secured with a clear rubber hair band elastic (those useless ones for hair) and tied ribbon round them,
I also got a pack of little spoons for about 15p from Asda's melted some chocolate, dipped the spoons into the chocolate and set them in the fridge and redipped them again and topped with cocoa, and some were topped with chopped nuts, once cooled i covered the tops of the spoons with the choc with cling film then tied those with little ribbons and popped those into the sides of the mugs with the snowman soup all in the one mug.
(i'm using the chocolate spoons instead of the candy canes) xxxx
