I disagree, I think that many cars made ten years ago were actually far more reliable than many made today.
The " ECO " thing has caused serious problems for reliability in many cars, modern diesel cars are certainly less reliable than their 10 year old pre- runners.
The closed loop technology was getting a bit "long in the tooth" so all the car makers were pretty damn good at it by that stage, coupled with engines that are "clever enough" to be computer diagnosed, but not "too clever for their own good."
I like ECUs, (I don't subscribe to changing breaker points/plugs every six months was a good thing, like people are keen to tell ya,) but the modern stuff hasn't been perfected yet.
Stuff like the silvertop Zetecs, FamilyII/EcoTecs, XU's etc are solid engines, drive like modern engines and need very little attention.
I don't buy the nonsense about old mans Moggy-Minor that never broke down, and it was simple to fix though..... Seriously, how many cars refuse to start on a cold morning now? 4,000 mile service intervals? Frequent ignition adjustments... No thanks.
My 2 pence anyway.

A good two pennyworth, I agree with all of that.;)0 -
You need to get in a Honda then...:)
Oh no you don't. Mates 2003 company Honda (gord knows what 4 x 4 , qrv/hrv all the same), has had a rattly/ squeaky clutch pedal from new. He drools over the silence of my Renault.
Honda? Phah, big fuel bills from high revving engines, on the promise of reliability. Give me good reliability and good fuel consumpttion any/every/day.
Why pay a premium for a Honda when they can't complete?????????????I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Comparing a Renault with a Honda, best laugh I've had all day ..:rotfl:
It is Renault that can't " complete ", usually the journey..0 -

Your knowledge of the VTEC engine is poor, the whole idea of variable valve timing decreases fuel consumption across the range. When you are driving in traffic etc, (where most consumption occurs) you use LESS fuel than a non VTEC equiped engine.
If the only way you can knock a Honda is a complaint of a "squeaky clutch pedal" after seven years, then well... I must have my priorities wrong.

My 170k mile E46 is rattle and squeak free, where as my g/f's 40k clio is like a tea tray falling downstairs.0 -

Don't go all "aren't BMW's wonderful" on me :rotfl:
I'll give you some real horror stories that'll make a rattly Clio sound rather insignificant!

I was merely saying mine does not squeak or rattle.
I did not bring BMW's into the thread, nor do I think they are as well built as they used to be.0 -

Compared to a Corsa/Fiesta/Polo/206 etc they're not better, or indeed no worse.
I'm actually looking for a Clio for myself, I don't see the same issues that everybody always seems to report with them. I think they're quite sweet, reliable little things.... Maybe I'm mad!

read again, FROM NEW, Honda cannot sort it.
I have no knowledge of the ZFztoc engine, other than in the 4x4 it is slower, revs twice as high, and uses 2 x the petrol than my car does, hence the comment, Even the guy that "owns"it is suprised
List all my comments not your selected bits, plus your prioities may not be wrong, but are muddled :A
Edited to add;
After 1/2 a lifetime in motorsport I am fully aware of variable valve technology, or what ever Honda or anyone else wants to call it.;
You seem to thing it is an economy measure, totally wrong.
It was designed to give a standard engine a performance enhancement over the original engine without destroying the origial engines economy under normal driving conditions.
Again and very unfortunately for Honda they neither had an economical engine to start of with, or a performance engine to end up with in the CRVI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
