I work in an independant computer store and we got sick of paying extra for mainly college and foreign marine students paying for a floppy disk or a single cd/dvd on their cards.
So we now have a min spend on any card is £5.00 and their is 2% surcharge on credit cards only.
Customers have to realise that especially for an independant retailer, it costs US for every card transaction so if we cannot make a certain amount of profit from each sale, then its not in our interests to be able to offer it cos if we continued, our prices would either have to rise or we'd go out of business.
Sometimes I know its a pain when you've got no change and a lot of places now won't give change out unless there is a transaction.
but if customers understand from our POV too, we have to make a profit on EVERY sale to cover the overheads.
as I once heard someone say "Its alright to not carry cash if you're Elvis"
Bad grammar but correct I feel.
Some places like hotels now won't accept cash payment as it costs them to have the cash taken away and banked by a security firm.
So just try to see it from the other side and if Tesco or any other major retailer has implimented a minimum spend on a card its to stop people taking the !!!! with card transactions that cost more than they are worth.:: No Unauthorised Links in Signatures please - FM ::0 -
You could always buy something extra to make the total to above the threshold, then return it straight away.
I bought an Xbox steering wheel in "Game" before Christmas, marked at £14.99. At the till the assistant said "£29.99 please". When I queried this I was pointed to the small print showing the cheaper price was only when purchased with another item. So with an eye on the no-quibble guarantee, I bought a scart lead, and then immediately returned it for a refund. Cost me nothing but two minutes time. The shop assistant seemed to need to do reams of paperwork.[size=-2] If this post was unhelpful, please tell me.

See, the type of independant computer store I frequent won't sell you one CD/DVD, 50 at the least if you're lucky
I see your point though, but for retailers like Tesco the cost of processing cards is far FAR lower than what it'll cost your shop
TBH with all this talk of a cashless society and contactless payments, new charging structures for merchant accounts will need to be implemented.0 -
Hi All,
With this in mind (and the post someone made before stating that their company could process Credit Cards cheaper than Debits) anyone any idea then why Aldi, Lidl and Netto only accept Debit cards but not Credit cards?
Surely in a lot of cases it would be cheaper to process a credit card (or about the same) than a debit card unless the % rate for processing credits was very high?
Cheers
Steve

Why did you travel to a Sainsburys to buy a 0.25pence pack of chewing gums?
Unless you were already in Sainsburys and done your shopping and on the way out you thought -oh dear, I'll go and line up to buy some chewing gums and realised you didnt have any cash but needed your £0.25pence chewing gums so brought them on you credit card. Right?
How come? I fascinated to know!
id just finsihed work at sainsburys and i didnt have the cash, i may have done but i couldnt find it so i used my debit card, i dont see what the problem is, its got nothing to do with anyone else if your use your card to buy a pack of chewing gum at 25pNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -
ahhhh I see.
Do you accept credit cards for a .25p purchase at Sainsburys?0 -
I've bought 8p noodles before in Sainsbury's and have had no problems. I have also done the same in Tesco, and have had no problems - although, be warned that if you attempt to pay by card more than 3 times on the same day at a self scan till it'll reject your card, but if you go to a till it will go through fine.
I never really use cash these days unless it's a small/indie shop that has a minimum spend, and tend to only carry a small cash float around with me (usually around £5 and a few coins) for such eventualities - everything else goes on the debit card.
Regarding the Tesco cafe thing; my local one happily accepts my card (although they questioned me and asked me if I had any cash the first time but now they don't bat an eyelid). It's run by "Avenance" (their logo appears on the receipt) but I assume all of the actual payment processing etc is done by Tesco, as it appears as "Tesco Store XXX" on my statement, and the till hardware is like all the others in store.
In any case, Tesco make billions of pounds in profit each year, so why shouldn't I be free to pay for small items on my card as I see fit? With the volume of transacations they process, it's hardly going to cost them 50p a pop, probably something far much lower which they have negotiated with the banks.0 -
makes you look skint quote
Who cares what others think about you??
What does it matter if someone "thinks" you look skint; they KNOW nothing about you.
Why are people so concerned what other "people" are thinking of them, they dont know you, I dont give a monkeys.
i'll tell you why, it's because i've almost battered the crap out of mindless morons who don't realise that people have things to do that don't include wasting time.
The amount of times i've had to queue up behind somebody who's buying literally nothing only to find them paying with a card. I'll apologise in advance to whoever it was on here but if i ever end up standing behind you in Asda while you pay for your 8p noodles i'll probably strangle you!! either that or buy you the chuffing noodles myself just to stop you wasting my time.0 -

How awful.
Not knowing how annoying you are to the rest of the shoppers. 8p noodles, where on earth do they sell 8p noodles? Not even in the scum section of Sainsburys!0 -
Asda Smart Price noodles are 8p, not too bad either to be honest but i'd rather starve than pay on card for them.0
