f@@king apple spoke to them again today and was told nothing they can do now until a new update is released.
apple engineers are aware of issue and working on it as we speak but cannot advise when it will be ready.
so apple think it is ok for customers with a 3g to have this problem that renders it useless until they can finally decide on a fix.

i must admit i was a fan of iphone had a 2g then 3g now 3gs but after dealing with the down right !!!! customer service dept i dont think i will be getting a 4 come upgrade time.
• John,

This site (clicky) appears to give a fairly "step by step" guide to downgrading back to OS 3. Hope it helps.

just an update on the situation with wifes 3g.

loads of time spent on phone to orange and apple about this problem, apple technical said will have to wait for software update so got transferred to customer relations and requested upgrade to 3gs or they buy out my orange contract the person i spoke with refused and said the fault was down to me because we chose to buy a 3g when the 3gs was out and also because i chose to update to ios4???apparently accordint to this person if you upgrade software you do it with the risk of it rendering the phone useless and there are no comebacks on apple.
saying we should have got the 3gs or waited for the 4 just about confirmed to me apple released known dodgy software on the 3g to try and force people to change phones.
after half hour calming down i rang orange back and told them what the apple customer relations representative said she immediately phoned them and put me back on to customer relations (different person) this time it was someone helpful and understood i have a useless phone until software update and they have no idea when that will be released so he has arranged for a iphone4 to be sent in replacement for this 3g.

so for any 3g owners with the same issue that are under warranty still keep on at them because there is stuff they can do like upgrade of phone model for free, all you need to do is give credit card details as security to make sure you send the old phone back.

speaking with orange the contracts work different for iphones you have 1 with them for airtime and 1 with apple for the handset,it also turns out apple are not bound by ofcom so basically they can do exactly what they want something orange confirmed to me.

i think i have definately woke up and smealt the roses and will not be having anymore products from apple in the future.

correct that is exactly what is happening, keep on at them and when technical say nothing can be done ask to speak to customer relations requesting they either buy out your contract or replace phone with something that works 3gs or 4 do not let them fob you off i have kept on at them since last week and they finally agreed to do something about it as it is unacceptable to have a useless phone since apple update software.

When I complained I had no issue getting it replaced with another 3g, I feel they will keep on doing this, so did you have to send the 3G back or what way is that working?

they said pointless changing for 3g as it could have same issues, apparently all the 3gs are different some ok some very slow and some have other issues.
not sent back yet could have done it that way and once they get it the 4 will be sent out,i gave them credit card details as security so they can send out the 4 and get the 3g back within 14 days or they will charge the credit card.

just keep on at them about how poor it is since update and dont let them say wait till new update,i told them it is simply unacceptable and just kept hassling them.
• I know you've had to keep on at them, but I don't know of another manufacturer that would replace an older model phone with their most up to date one. I'd hate to try that with the likes of Samsung and HTC!!

Oscar,no doubt you are right but I have had a nightmare with them final straw was the persons insistence that it was my fault for having a 3G and not a newer model and then for choosing to update.
To say I was fuming is an understatement, thankfully I spoke to someone with a brain after who has replaced for te 4 model even though I only asked for a 3GS just so it is useable again.
I realise got a good result it's just my impression of apple as a company has been changed I used to think they were ok as never had problems but after this it is quite apparent they are a law un to themselves and do not care about customer relations.Out of all people I dealt with only one was any good, maybe if I was not told it was my fault the phone is crap I would not have got the new one?

Yes and maybe if you ring back you'll find it hasn't been done at all and the new advisor will know nothing about it, which wouldn't really surprise me with Orange
