the missus has got a 3g and is about 7-8 months in to a 18 month contract.
the phone is on orange.
basically the phone has been rendered useless since the ios4 update,i thought maybe apple would do something about it an installed 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 still the same.spoke to orange who said it was apples probelm spoke to apple who denied knowing ios4 was a problem.
my question is can she somehow get out of the contract or demand a replacement 3gs off orange as this current one is not fit for purpose?

There is a way of reverting back to the original OS 3.x.x but it's quite complicated, apparently. Someone on here will point you in the right direction, though, I'm sure.If I've helped you please show your appreciation by using the "Thanks" button

thanks i tried that but it did not work for some reason the phone just would not come out of dfu mode every time i tried.
she is close on slinging this over priced piece of junk out the window now.
told her she should have got the 3gs like me no problems with mine:rotfl:0 -
Is there an apple store near you? It may be that you could book an appointment with a "Genius" to go through the phone with a fine-toothed comb. If they can show that there's something wrong with the phone they would usually just replace it with a new one. They may also be able to help you restore back to 3.x if you want to.In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move. The late, great, Douglas Adams.0

I also remember a few weeks ago coming across an article that claimed apple was swooping the updated 3G with a new one, don't know how true that is, because I doubt f their is actually an official way of reverting to the old firmware, unless, you are jailbroken. So just try as mentioned before to take it to an apple store and see how it goes.0

spoke to orange again today who put me on to apple, they have got me to change some settings to try and help and said give it a day and get back to them if still a problem.
needless to say it has not made a difference but from what they say phone will not get changed yet as apple are investigating the issue with 3g phones, not much use to the missus as she wants to use the phone now not when apple decide to fix the issue whenever that may be.0 -
This worked for me:
Turn off Spotlight search indexing. From Settings/ General/ Home Button/ Spotlight search, turn search indexing off for as many items as possible. This reduces the overall workload of the system, so it appears to give an overall performance boost that is significant.0 -

that is what apple had me do along with clearing cookies and setting the email check to manual, all of which only made very minimal difference so phone is still virtually useless.0 -
