Hi. I was wondering if any of you could give me some advice please?
I went for a smear today as we are going to start ttc in a few weeks and I have read that you should have one prior to ttc. But the nurse told me she could not do a smear as it is not due until November and even though I wanted to check everything was ok before trying for a baby (as I had an abnormal smear when younger) she refused saying that early smears are now against policy. But if we get lucky and are pregnant by November I will miss my smear as you can't have one when pregnant. This seems crazy to me as I just wanted to check I have no abnormal cells before ttc. She said that me deciding to try for a baby at this time was "unlucky" in terms of potentially missing my smear and that the only solution if I am worried was to wait to ttc until after November.
I also asked if I could have a blood test to check if I am still immune (Rubella) or if I need a Rubella jab. I read that the latest research is that immunity does not last as long as first thought. But she advised that this was not required because the midwife would check this if I get pregnant and if I needed a Rubella jab they could do it if I get pregnant. I said that my understanding is that this would potentially be harmful to a baby. The nurse seemed not to know and just said it was best to discuss it with a midwife. But I'm not pregnant so don't have a midwife! I have however read that the jab is harmful to unborns and am really concerned that she gave such wrong advice.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or can offer some advice? I really think she has given me the wrong advice, especially regarding the Rubella jab.
Thanks.0 -

I have just found this on the NHS website:
Planning a pregnancy
If you are considering trying for a baby, ask your GP to test your immunity to rubella before you become pregnant. As immunity to rubella can wear off over time, it is important that your immunity level is checked by your GP before every pregnancy.
If the test shows that you do not have very few or no rubella antibodies, you will be offered the MMR vaccine to protect you against rubella. You can have the MMR vaccine before you become pregnant, but not during pregnancy. After having the MMR vaccine, you should take care to avoid becoming pregnant for one month.
If you are pregnant
If you are already pregnant, you will be offered a rubella immunity test by your GP or midwife as part of your antenatal care. Most women are immune and no further action is required.
If you are not immune to rubella, try to avoid anyone who has the rubella virus. Inform your GP if you come into contact with anyone who has the rubella virus (see box, right).
You can receive the MMR vaccination after giving birth to protect you against rubella in the future. The MMR vaccine can be given to breast-feeding mothers without any risk to their baby
http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Rubella/Pages/Prevention.aspx
and also this
If you are not immune, you cannot have the jab while pregnant because the vaccination contains a live virus which could cause rubella infection in the baby. For the same reason, you should not become pregnant for at least a month after having your rubella jab.
http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/1104.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=137
So it would seem your nurse was incorrect with her information.

Secondly, with the Rubella, I can't tell you categorically that she is wrong, but I have to say my understanding was the same as yours. I would say the same thing though - about asking your GP...
Good luck, I would be super frustrated - and am frequently by the idiosyncrasies of the NHS - but I hope you get it sorted"I am indelibly stained by hope and longing" - Nuts in May0 -

This is what FF says about CM
Cervical fluid is produced by your cervix as you approach ovulation due to increased estrogen. It flows from the cervix into the vagina where it can easily be observed. Your cervical fluid changes throughout your cycle, increasing in quantity and becoming more clear and stretchy as you get closer to ovulation.
In the most common pattern, cervical fluid starts out dry after your period and then gets sticky, then creamy, then wet and watery, becoming most like eggwhite as you get closer to ovulation. Usually it dries up quickly after ovulation. You may get different types of cervical fluid on the same day. Always record your most fertile cervical fluid to make sure that you do not miss a potentially fertile day.

Bloody hell you lot have been chatty today! I can't believe how many pages I just caught up on since this morning - took me nearly an hour! Lots of fun and frivolity though, which is what I like to see
Not a lot to add, myself...took the day off today and have been out shopping with my sisbought a lovely summer dress.
Hello candlewax, I would def go to your GP if I were you. At the very least you should be tested for rubella (blood test). I think you're being very sensible wanting your smear early, so see what your GP says.
Hope you're alright emsbet
Went to the gym this evening and it nearly killed me - I think I was dehydrated having been shopping all day with no water. My muscles felt really weak and I had no energyAh well, can't be a duracell gym bunny all the time!
