Knitting, crochet, embroidery, cross-stitching, sewing, cooking/baking, local history, reading, crosswords, quizzes, logic puzzles, gentle walking, bit of genealogy/family history, listening to music and, of course, being involved with my five gorgeous grandkids (not so much a hobby, more a way of life ;)).

I don't have a lot of hobbies :o I like photography, reading and anything to do with dogs/cats. I'm not into the show circuit and no-one does agility in my area but I absolutely love to scent with my GSD :)

    Hmmm...Think that's about it really :o

I love travelling and doing things with my kids.

I play and coach rugby league, but my secret passion is desperate housewives - I download each episode weekly - I love it!

My hobbies are reading and thats it :o Maybe I should find another hobby.

I like photography but I'm pretty rubbish at it and haven't even picked my camera up in ages tbh.

I'd like to have a go at crochet but I'm not sure were to start and can be quite lazy sometimes. Also I can be quite a quitter if I can't get the hang of something easily. I saw someones pics of little animals they had crocheted (sp?) and thought they were brilliant but I know I could never do anything like that... which made me give up already befor I've even tried. I'll find myself an online tutorial and give it a try one day.

I was clearing the garage out before Christmas and there's boxes of old nails; screws; hinges, all sorts of metal. When it gets a bit warmer to work out there i'm going to start and try to make sculptures, perhaps as garden ornaments. I already have a small welder. Who knows, when i'm famous .......

I think thats a brilliant idea :T It's something I'd love to do too. In a few years time you could of started with garden ornaments and then be making huge enormous sculptures lol.
Even if you stumble, you're still moving forward.

Crochet, sewing, reading, computers (yep, can be a bit of a nerd at times :D) cardmaking. Also like playing around with photos on the computer, was really pleased when I found out how to do those black and white photos with just one bit in colour!

Loads of other stuff I would like to try but work keeps getting in the way

One of my resolutions this year was to have more hobbies and become more crafty. We run a business and do have a stressful life at the moment so I want something where I can "switch off". I am not naturally arty or good with my hands though.

DD & myself have started a scrapbook, I have already worked out though how expensive this is going to be! But I want to continue with it. Also I treated myself to a decent camera last year and would like to get more into photography.

Reading is my real hobby, always has been and always will be.
  • Hi Everyone!
I've always found hobbies to eat up waaaay too much money but that hasn't stopped me - until now! This year I resolved not to spend any more money on my hobbies until all the unfinished projects are finished - so that's mainly dolls houses, bears, dolls and cross stitching. I started a blog in an effort to keep me on track and to make sure things get finished - so far so good!
Decluttering, home-making and 'proper' cooking are my priorities this year and trying to finish all those unfinished hobby projects before spending any more money!

One of the saddest things for me in this recession is that my hobbies and pastimes have pretty much ceased. I used to knit a lot but yarn is so expensive now that I don't bother anymore, and I used to collect books from junk & charity shops for 20p - £2 but yesterday I went to 4 charity shops and they didn't have a single book under £4!

I have started to do a little gardening this year which is relatively cheap considering how many seeds you get in a packet, but I have to admit when it's cold or raining i'll be staying indoors.

Is anyone else's hobbies suffering because of the price rises? Or how about some suggestions for cheap hobbies to take up?

    Hi dandycandy,

My main hobbies are cooking, gardening and cardmaking which are all thankfully saving me money in the recession.

This thread has lots of ideas for moneysaving hobbies that may help:

And this thread has more ideas on how to pass the time:

    old style pastimes

I'll add your post to the first link later to keep the suggestions together.

you can grow quite a bit of salad stuff quite cheap on your window sill or in pots by your door, years ago a gardener suggested putting the money you would have spent on the vegetables and flowers you grow, in savings box, that would pay for seed for next year and what was left over you could spend on hobbies.

there are plenty of places on web sites that have affordable yarn and material, so far I haven't had any problems. I make my own soap, paper, spin wool for all sorts.
