I am so glad I've found this thread as I'm going insane. Regworts you are a fountain of knowledge and maybe you or someone else can help me?
I have a vauxhall astra with a VDO stereo. We had a new battery fitted and of course the stereo went into safe mode after being disconnected.
After looking up a few details on the net I found a code and input it 3 times, obviously this didnt work as its a VDO stereo and we had to resort to paying the dealer £30 for the code.
We got the code yesterday and have followed all instructions to input it, including leaving the stereo on for 2 hours or so with the ignition switched on, but still it is showing "6SAFE".
It does not beep when I press AS and/or the on button and I know the stereo is not faulty as it was in full working order prior to the battery being fitted.
I press AS, press on, no beep, then press AS and it just shows "6SAFE". I'm frightened to death of pressing anything else now as its not doing anything and I dont want to lock it for longer than necessary.
Any ideas how to unlock this stereo so I can get to the point of entering the code? I'm driving in complete silence!0 -

If it is showing 6SAFE then it usually means that you have entered four wrong codes and it should reset itself automatically by leaving it switched on for a couple of hours.(You say that you have already done this but did you leave it UNDISTURBED for two hours? If so , did the radio remain ON during the two hours as some radios automatically switch themselves OFF after an hour or so?)
Do you have the radio manual with the Entry Instructions?
If not , then can you confirm the radio MAKE+MODEL and I`ll check the entry instructions.
If the instructions you have mentioned above are correct , then what I would do is to Press AS and ON button at the same time then leave it switched on (undisturbed ) for as long as it takes to reset.
Then enter your code and press AS again (for at least 15 seconds)
Let me know the answers to the above questions...and whether the above suggestion works or not.
If it still does not work , and the display now says 5SAFE , it might mean that you are using the wrong code.0 -
ok sorry - but maybe somebody try found this code?
As stated previously your Serial Number is not in the available Philips database and so your code will not be available for free from anywhere on the Internet.
You`ll have to pay the Main Dealer or a Professional Decode Specialist..0 -

We have to hold the AS button in then press the ON button and its supposed to beep which it doesnt, then, enter the code followed by the AS button. But we cant get the beep, my husband is a cab driver and has sat there today with the engine running for 1 hour and then had the ignition on for 1 hour after that, when you say undisturbed does that mean the engine cant go from running to just the ignition being on? He can easily sit there all day looking at "6safe" with the ignition on as he is in the car for 8-10 hours, but he does need to turn the engine on and off when he gets a fare.
We just cant get it to read anything but "6safe" and beep at us and give us 4 dashes ---- then we could enter the code. We just turn it on and it stays like that with either "Safe" or "6Safe" displayed.
Maybe we are not giving it long enough to reset itself, or maybe it is the wrong code that we have just paid out for. We have the radio manual, but are just confused about this.
Thanks again in advance for your advice and surely something must work, even if the Vauxhall dealers have a machine that can just reset it!0 -

I think that you should be getting the "beep" when you switch ON + AS ...even though the radio is not ready to receive the code (as it is in the 6SAFE condition)
The only thing I`m not too sure about is whether your radio is now fully locked after only four wrong codes. I reckon this to be highly unlikely (but possible perhaps?) as most radios allow at least 10 wrong codes.
A couple of questions to answer :
1...Has the display ever shown anything other than 6SAFE ...or has it been counting down from 10SAFE (or similar display)?
2...When you try and enter your code , do any digits of the code appear on the display? If so , what is the sequence of events displayed?
As it`s late , I`ll just make a couple of suggestions to try ...then let you post back with any results to be read during Saturday sometime.
1...Try a full reboot...by disconnecting the radio from the battery supply for 20 minutes, replace it then carry out the Entry Instructions again.
2...Try the reset procedure again as suggested in the previous email.
The "SWITCHED ON ..UNDISTURBED " just means leaving the Ignition switched on and making sure that the radio does not switch itself off automatically whilst you are waiting. If you are switching the engine off after an hour , is he using the ignition key to switch off as this might be disturbing this reset cycle making it start all over again. Normally , a couple of hours should be more than enough.(especially as 6SAFE normally means you`ve only entered four wrong codes previously)0 -
tnhx mate ure great:T

The display first asked for the digits and when input incorrectly it went to 9SAFE, so it did count down to 6SAFE. However, since then it has only ever shown 6SAFE. The radio was disconnected overnight and still is showing 6SAFE. Perhaps it is permanently locked or has been given a new code?
It definately does not beep, the make of it is VDO CDR 500, if that makes any difference and that we possibly should be pressing something else?
Maybe the fact he is going from ignition to engine running is effecting it as its still not moving. This is a total mystery.
Thanks for your help and if you've any other suggestions then they are welcome!0 -
