Massive Problem

I've just restarted my laptop, and a message popped up saying that a software or hardware change has caused the computer to not shut down properly. So it gives me the option of starting up in normal mode, 3 different types of safe mode or from last well known configuration that works.

I've tried all of them, it gets so far then just restats and goes to the original screen. I haven't backedup in ages and am really worried i'm gonna loose all my work i've only got the sytem restore points on the computer.

Please Help me. I'm crapping myself here

  • its an acer aspire so i don't think i got a windows cd with it.

I got a single cd called System CD Rev 1.0

and three cd's called recovery cds.

when i try to startup in safemode with command prompt loads of lines of code spring up. the last one finishes with

    system32\DRIVERS\gagp30kx.sys

I can't afford to loose all my work right now.
  • sorry i'm being a bit short, i'm really worked up right now.
  • Don't panic, there is a 99.99% chance that your data is safe, it's just a matter of getting at it.

For future reference.. Norton Ghost or Acronis Trueimage.. buy one of them and backup.

What equipment do you have at your disposal ? PC's, caddies, floppy disk? Any friends with an XP CD?

  • i have my flatmates computer i'm on now. no xp cd as such, i have one down in preston, and may be able to get at one here. i'll ask my gf.
  • I'm not sure if the Acer CD's are images, or proper XP CD's, (maybe another Acer owner can advice). If you GF has an XP CD, that might be the easiest starting point to fix it.

  • HAs this been going on for a while as my mate had the same problem and he left it to cool down - it's been hot. Also he said it could be the graphics card; try taking it out and trying again
