thanks everyone, i'll be back tomorrow around lunchtime. hopefully with either a usb thing or an XP cd. I'm gonna try and source a cheap one in Newcastle town centre tomorrow. anyone know of anywhere?0

you could try installing this on the other PC, if the XP files are on there, it will create a bootable rescue CD, or you could point the program at your XP CD.

righto
I got one of these caddy things and have hit of a bit of a brick wall. it lets me access one of the two partitions on my drive but when i try to access the other one (the one with windows and my work on). the computer just freezes. I;ve left it for a bit with no success.
Any ideas?
I haven't got hold of a copy of XP yest, but might do by the end of the night0 -
You could try running chkdsk on the new drive letter, in windows explorer, right click on it, properties, tools, check driveEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

i've tried right clicking on it, it just locks up the same as it would if i tried to access it by double clicking on it.
I had another look at the discs that cam with it. The recovery disc set of 3, says in brackets windows XP. Is it likely that these are the the discs for the operating system. The other single disc has the word bootable on it.0 -
try sticking your disks into the working PC, the XP one should have an i386 directory in it, and should prompt you to install xp (obviously don't follow throught with this).
if your usb disk has a drive letter assigned to it, you could try it from a command prompt
start, run, cmd
d: (or whatever)
then chkdsk d: /FEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks for all the help, my girlfriends dad came round with a cd version of linux and we manages to copy the files i needed to the drive i could read through the caddy. I then copied them to my usb key and then wiped and started again.
Only thing I'm gutted about is the loss of all my favourites in Opera.0
