Can anyone help me please I have to much data to do the factory restore.
I can get the computer up and running but get as far as Desktop and instead of loading any icons or start menu I just get a message box up on a blank screen saying Windows explorer encountered a problem and needs to close hit debug or close button but then nothing just a blank desktop.
This is my spec and previous problem link http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=263923
Is there anyway to use the reload cd to repair the corrupt files rather than going to auto restore mode and wiping out my hard drive data that is stored there as i really dont want to lose all my loaded photos/ files /programs.
i am not a technician but can follow clear instructions quite well if i am required to in order to save my files etc.
Please help if you can
regards
Crystal

First of all, don't do anything drastic, it's highly likely that your data is still there, and recoverable.
Can you get into safe mode by hitting F8 at boot?
If so , click start, run, cmd
chkdsk c: /F /R
then reboot
When you get this working, I suggest you buy a copy of Norton Ghost or Acronis Trueimage, and back it up to DVD's or an external hard disk, because one day, your data won't be recoverable, and having an image backup is the easiest way of restoring your system and data to a fully working state.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks albertross
I am off to try that now, will check back later to let you know how i went on.
Fingers crossed its good news

When you get to the desktop press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get the task manager.
If it appears select the Applications tab and click the New Task button (bottom right)
In the box that appears type explorer then click the OK button
This should start Windows Explorer ... but it may fail again0 -
Well that was a short turn around.
Sorry albertross that didnt work.I got into safe mode no problem until i came to desktop then nothing loaded as before no start menu no icons just a window saying the same thing Windows explorer encountered a problem and needed to close again giving 2 options close or debug buttons. Still nothing happens.
Any further suggestions would be greatfully received

It could be this .... http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1122527413
"I too had this problem for the last 3 days, I finally had enough and stumbled upon a web forum explaining the problem.. It's a trojan (I didnt write the name of it down but I think it was something like "backdoor trojan32") and there is a file in your windows dir that reappears at reboot. You need to use "KillBox" (free) and list this file - C:\windows\q1311165666_disk.dll, mark "delete at reboot" and click exit, reboot system. I did this in less than 5 minutes and its completely gone!!! thank GOD!!!!! "
there seems to be various causes of the error so it's not definately this but may worth a try.
Do you know your DOS commands?
Do the start new task thing again and type CMD this will open a DOS window
with a prompt like this
C:\Document and Settings\username>
after the > type in cd c:\windows and press return
the prompt will change to c:\windows>
after the > type in dir *.dll and press return
this will list of the .dll files in the windows directory
if there is one called q1311165666_disk.dll this is the problem
if not the problem is something else0 -
Thanks again Sooler
That didnt show anything up like the file you suggested and the only thing that i am not sure of was a on 30-08-2006 an entry showing 335,872 bytes and it listed as GPalm.dll
any other entries are from 2004 and before that
only listing 10 files in total is that about right or are a load missing ?

have you tried hitting the "debug" button when it asks ?Ex forum ambassador
Long term forum member0 -
Browntoa thanks for input
I have hit the debug button and nothing happens. I dont even get send error report to microsoft as you would normally get if you hit debug.
I have been in boot up and hit debugging mode and nothing and i have done same on restore to last known good configuration again this didnt solve it.
So any techno wizards out there with any other ideas I would be grateful of your input on this.
p.s
All software is original manufactures software and i have a restore disk that holds windows xp in it so not a seperate disk and unable to do a repair from it rather than a restore, which I really want to avoid as it will factory reset system and i lose all my files, photos etc
