Help !!! Windows Explorer wont load
Comments

have you tried using a different username?
try this....
Ctrl-Alt-Del, on the applications tab, click new task, Type Explorer.exe.
Does it try and debug explorer that way?0 -
Flang Thanks
I am running Win xp home 2002 with sp 2 fully updated on regular basis the computer is a time build AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2800+ 2.08 GHz, 704 MB of Ram if that helps
I have tried typing in new task the explorer.exe and it just brings up the same notification as before but debug still doesn't work doing that.
I can click on new task and browse to see and access almost all my files but cannot get anything loaded in my desktop only this error message.
Surely there is a way to overwrite windows explorer with a clean file without having to lose all my data before i can back it up. Or even get it to accept another win xp disk to do just a repair ?
But I for one dont know how to do this
Any suggestions ? anyone ?? please ???

When you go into safe mode are you selecting system restore? If you do the desktop never gets a chance to load. Presumably you can get into the Safe Mode (DOS) version?553780080

If you can do a new task, you could try
cmd
sfc /scannow
How much in monetary terms is the data worth to you, how much could/would you spend to retrieve it?
Do you have access to another PC that you could plug the hd in to.
Do you have any techies at work, or friends that could help?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
Albertross thanks again
I opened task manager typed in cmd in new task then typed as you said sfc /scannow and the computer is currently running windows file protection.
ok Message coming up now saying Insert your windows Media files now
more info tab brings up possible reasons for this problem:
> You inserted the wrong cd (i.e.,a different windows product cd than the version installed ).
> thr cd-rom drive in your system is not functioning.
I have a restore disk from shop i bought computer from and that has windows xp on it but it will restore to factory set if i use it
??????? so what do i do now ??????????
I have a laptop that i have had to dig out which is what i am using at the present but i warn you its anceint and runs so slow. I also have a usb hard drive caddy and a clean new 250gb hard drive ( not sure if my computer will take that without it being partitioned)
As for the data held on the problem computer yes it is valuable I have uploaded years of holiday pics. scanned in pics of my dad before he died. not to mention the headache it would cause trying to get back all my files folders spreadsheets etc etc.
Thing is it all looks intact apart from not being able to run with win explorer.
i can go to task mananger new task then browse and open up most of the files from there.

Wowwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!
It did the windows protection file check and spat out the above about windows missing media files and needing them to place in dll cache .
I clicked skip and the protection kept going to the end.
Then nothing so thought i would set command to exit so typed in end ,exit , win all bad commands so i typed explorer and a second later my desktop icons appeared along with start menu......
so here goes i am going to try to back it all up asap now.
Then do a complete restore of system to get shot of all those previous glicks
Thank you so much everyone for all your input.

Nice one
Whatever you do don't turn it off/restart it until you've backed up all your stuff!! 553780080 -
I am back with an update.
Upon getting windows explorer to open up again on my desktop my computer went into windows update , downloaded 7 updates then said complete apart from one update unable to download but needed to reboot.
I allowed it to reboot and it froze screen when it got as far as windows xp booting up screen.
I eventually pressed reset and it did checking hard drive then back to loading,
Got as far as desktop and Windows Explorer encountered a problem again.
I did the new task chkdsk fix and repair and nothing.
I then did the last thing Albertross mentioned, New task, cmd ,sfc \scannow again i got that message from windows protection about insert disk, did that as missing dll cache to do with windows media file, clicked cancel as wouldnt accept it (this is original restore disk) Windows protection finished and nothing..... I typed explorer in cmd , and hey presto back came my desktop.
So I am up and running again. but would love to know if i can repair this error by overiting it in some way for the correct path or at least finding a cure to repair it.
