Research into getting a scooter

hi everyone,

I am looking at buying a scooter to get about on, I am sick and tired of public transport and cant afford a to keep a car on the road.

I have been into a bike shop in town and the sales man reckoned that for around a £50 a month on finance I would be able to get a 125 cc Liberia bike + kit (jacket, gloves, waterproof trousers and helmet, chain to lock it up and a box for the back). I have no idea whether this is reasonable nor what I should be looking for in a bike. I would obviously need to pass my cbt and as I am very unconfident I would likely look at doing further training too. I want it to be a reasonable bike, low costs etc and able to go on the motorway.

How much would I be looking at for insurance? Road tax is £15 the guy said. Anything else?

Has anyone any ideas of places to have a look for research? How much I should be looking at to spend? or anything else useful.

Thanks

Jen

A good starting point would be what sort of budget you're on.

Do you need finance or could you buy a second-hand scooter outright?

I would need finance. I am looking at around £50 a month as that seems fair. I am going to be changing jobs shortly for 30-40 hour one. A scooter would make this a lot easier as jobs which are on transport links are difficult to find, specially if I cant be flexible ie the buses become even less frequent at night.

Well as long as the distances involved aren't too great and you don't plan on using fast roads a scooter is probably a good solution.
  • a what, liberia? never heard of that one.

Keep away from crap chinese bikes, get one from a Japanese company (Honda/Yamaha) or Italian (Piaggio Group)

ok ......... thanks - it wasnt really the price it was the size of it I liked the look of in the shop.... sounds daft but I have not even been near a push bike in years and years and I am only 5'2 and 9 and 1/2 stone so looking at it in the shop it looked managable........
  • I wouldn't write them off that quickly, at least they have a dealer network in the UK and are officially imported. I would check on the warranty to see what is and what isn't covered as according to the web site it's for 3 years.

I would prefer it didnt break down/anything go wrong. period.

I'm really struggling to find anything out. I've just been on the site and my pop up blocked. It was very sell sell sell orientated. I spoke to the guy in the shop and obviously he said it was the best bike he had and agreed that size wise it was ideal whereas a lot of them which I saw seemed huge (in conparison to me). I have searched for reviews but that just came up with more advertising and a site ful of jargon on engine sizes and so on.......

Where do people find this type of information out? Surely other non-bike experienced people have bought scooters? According to the media its all the rage for commuters in big cities.
