and then there's the radical Badger who has an opinion on everything he isn't qualified in...........

A curious remark, considering my actual words to the OP were: "...My instinct, were I in your position, would be to call back the experienced chap who quoted you and go through it with him, stage by stage. Ask him about the claims made for the advantages of lining and see what he says. If he sounds convincing and is willing to back his workmanship and experience, I'd be very tempted to trust him."
  • Stumbled across this when looking for advice. My concern here is the 'experienced bloke' said he could come back if the op wanted, re smoke test? I thought this is a requirement of the regs? If so then whether the op 'wants it' isn't really of relevance surely?
If I had a pound for every pound I'd lost, I'd be confused

The problem is that Engineers( installers) all have their own little power trips. They think that only they can do the job required, anyone else will not fit it properly.

You also have the problem that Hetas and Gas safe are regulatory bodies that installers have to abide by. The problem with this is that the powers that be, do not live in the real world, more than likely have not fitted an aplliance in years, and come up with rules that they do not back up with tough action.

I used to recommend a local chimney sweep to my customers, he used to leave his cards in my shop. All the fire shops in the area used him. It transpired that he was not Corgi registered at all, even though he had their logo all over his vans. He just got a telling off by them, nothing more. He could have killed someone. We all took him on face value as he had been around for 30 years.

I do not install solid fuel, none of my guys are Hetas registered, however I always work to the adage that, If the manufactrer states something is required, you do it. It costs a fortune to get appliances authorised by the bodies that be, they are rigidly tested and if something is stated in the manufacturers guides, it is there for a reason.

More and more people are fitting solid fuel themselves, thinking it is a simple DIY job. It is not. Solid fuel is as dangerous as a gas appliance if not fitted correctly, at least a gas appliance has an oxygen depletion system on it.

Wood being Neutral carbon, doesnt mean that the fumes from them are non toxic, you can still die from them.
